Since color isn't a determining factor, as it was with me....
I'd say that since the $50K 97's original warranty is apparently expired, and since I don't think you can buy a Chrysler extended one, I'd consider passing unless you get a sweet deal and are able to have the car throughly checked out. $50k doesn't sound too bad for a pristine example with 11k miles though. (Check with Erica @ Fitzgerald Dodge in NH about the warranty. She might be able to help)
If you like the $54k's Kinesis wheels, (I prefer stock myself) and it checks out OK, might be fine since the warranty is still in effect.
If you really want a newer one, and can afford $65k, you might as well go for a few more "K" and get an '01 with ABS rather than an '00, then add an extended warranty for a total of 7 years coverage. I know someone that just picked up an '01 GTS with under 1,000 miles for just a bit more than the '00's price.
With all that said, since very little has changed since 1996 both in looks and performance, I'd tend to go with an older and cheaper Viper rather than a newer and more expensive one as long as I could get some warranty time and the car was clean.
Out of state no issue to me as it's fun drive home... I did 700 miles solo non-stop when I bought mine.
Either way, bring a VCA member to check out the ride, or at least bring it to a certified Viper tech.
Good Luck
