I have a 2000 R/T 10 that I did some work to about 1500 miles ago. I had the radiator out at that time. It now has about 23,000 mile total. My problem is that last I drove it the temp went up eraticly. It would get really hot, then I let it cool down, and sometimes when I started it, it would cool itself down like you hit a switch. I don't think that it is a air lock, because I have put 1500 miles on it since. I think that it must be the thermostat?? Has anyone come across this? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Chad

Chadebarry,

Please be more specific on the temps, exactly how high does the temp go and where does it fall too.

As far as the car cooling itself fast when you start it remember the water pump is not turning when the car is off and the hot coolant stays in your engine where the sensor is. And when you start it the pump moves the cooler coolant into the engine and so on, hence cooling of the engine quickly.

The temp went up to 240 and then when I let it cool for a bit and started it it went down to about 190. I didn't burp the system, but I have put 1500 miles on it, so I didn't think that an air lock would be the problem?

From what I understand, without burping you have small air pockets in the cooling system...heads I guess....and over time because of these air pockets it is a hot spot and will boil off more water and then you run hot. Burp it.....its free...and see what happens.

It's the impeller in the water pump slipping and it should be a warranty replacement for the entire pump. I had the same thing happen on my RT/10 2000. Dodge acknowledged several cars having this problem.
