so i have the dreaded waterpump failure (2000 rt/10) and I am going to replace it myself. a few questions.
in service manual it says to remove the crankshaft pulley. is that really necessary?

any suggestions on what to use to ensure all gasket material is removed?
what about replacement, any certain type of gasket sealer required?
thanks for the help.

I replaced my water pump when I replaced my entire cooling system (a "just because" project). Anyway, I did remove the crankshaft pulley as specified. It was not that big of a deal to do. The pulley attaches to the balancer with some small screws, and then falls right off. No big ass socket or puller is needed.

I used the aerosol Permatex gasket remover and a straight edge razor to clean the engine of gasket residue. You have to be careful with that product as it will damage plastics and paint. Not difficult to manage, just a note.

I used a thin film of blue RTV sealer on the pump per recommended by the Wiz.

There is also a post in the Illustrated section where I was doing my t-stat (same time as the cooling system "replacement") and you may be able to see by some of the pics what's involved with the water pump. It was off during the stat change write-up.

first off I really appreciate the way this group comes to the aid of a fellow viper lover. especially the wizard offering to help me over the phone, on a saturday no less! I will save that call until another day when I REALLY need his expertise.

I was expecting the old pump to look much worse off than it did.
there is some discoloration/ deterioration on the end of the shaft but otherwise seems normal.

my symptoms were exactly the same as people reported on the threads.
temp gauge pegged at 250, then when car was cool it seemed to act normal for a while then got hot again, would cool down under low revs and heat up again under high revs, ran much hotter than normal etc.
are there any other after effects or issues to be prepared for?
I caught the problem pretty quickly any chances something else got damaged (heads etc).

what is that thing that baz is wearing working on that car--
a coat? I've heard of those, not much use for one in florida though....

thanks everyone.
P.S. the search engine can be your best friend......
