Put a new battery in the car tonight and noticed a black round spring loaded switch on the drivers side of the battery tray. What is this switch for?

Did a search and found pictures of it but not what its function is.

Cheers,
George

This is directly from my manual.

The battery temperature sensor is used to determine
the battery temperature and control battery
charging rate. This temperature data, along with
data from monitored line voltage, is used by the PCM
to vary the battery charging rate. System voltage will
be higher at colder temperatures and is gradually
reduced at warmer temperatures.
The sensor is located on the inboard side of the
battery tray, and makes contacts with the side of the
battery.

Thank you for the answer. Never realized the Viper had this, let alone heard of this in any other cars. I wonder if this is more important on a battery
that is mounted externally versus an engine compartment where it stays pretty toasty :dunno:
