So, I have a 99rt stock rear end and stock transmission. It has 32k on the clock. Recently, there has been a loud whine in what I thought was the diff...but today as I drove it (after changing the diff fluid) I noticed closer and it sounds almost like it coming from the transmission area. Well, needless to say, I am stumped. But it is very noticeable and it didn't go away with a fluid change on the diff. Would a tran fulid being low cause a whine even when in neutral? Could it be a wheel bearing going out?

Thanks in advance guys, just stumped on this one.

when driving, does it stop when clutch is pushed in?
I'm guessing it's still the rear end.
Have you had car up in the air and spun the wheels?

It keeps going when the clutch is pushed in...I will try jacking up the diff and spin the wheels to see if I hear anything. Good idea :)

I just replaced the pinion bearing...could it be bad already? I suppose I would hope so as it is the quicker fix :)

I had my pinion bearing replaced twice. Once from certified Viper Tech who over torqued the collapsable spacer (crush sleeve) and it started leaking again---long story. I'm not sure if it caused a whine or not. If over-tightened it could be putting too much pressure on bearing.
If sitting still (in neutral), do you hear it when you increase RPM's?
You only hear it when moving, correct?
Sorry, but that's about all I have to offer. :dunno:

I don't hear it when sitting still...only when in motion. It is not leaking, but if they in fact did overtighten it, then perhaps it is putting pressure and causing that sound?
