I got my New 08 last night, thanks to Woodhouse, but after getting it in the garage tonight after a short, 10 - 15 mile trip I noticed a load occational tapping.

I popped the hood and it is coming from the area where the uppper radiator hose enters the engine. Its not constant, not a constant but happens every few seconds or so for part of the time, then it got quiet, then it did it again a few times. Is there anything there to make this noise? Maybe air? A valve?

Thanks in advance.

Car also pops in exhaust if you rev her to say 3000 rpm and let off gas. Normal? And what dealer in NJ has a good viper tech?

Normal. Did you read the BREAK IN PROCEDURE ?

There are lots more noises during 500 mile break in, fewer after 1000

Was the defrost on? The defrost position cycles the AC compressor also, regardless of the heat/cold position.

I didnt have defrost or anything on. It only happens after she is fully warmed up and the cooling system is cycling from what I can tell. Never hear it in the morning for first few miles or so. Car now has 100 miles on her driven following break in recommendations. Car feels better now than 90 miles ago :drive:
Just needs more seat time, but that noise just doesnt sound like anthing i've heard in a car before, and I've owned alot of vehicles and generally work on my own.

Thanks guys.

Chuck has helped me a number of times, but if your in that part of NJ you might want to consider Scotty at Warnock Dodge as well...

I think mine (also a new 08) is doing that too. Started at maybe 100 miles. Sounds like a playing card in the spokes of the wheel of a kids bike (anyone remember that?) It varies with engine speed.

Ok guys... question of th day, I want to bleed the air out of the cooling system. There is a bleeder screw on top of the engine drivers side front next to the temp sending unit ( I think).

Now the question, what is the procedure, Car running at temp? car not running, car hot, car cold?

Thanks guys, this is definately where the noise is coming from, dont know why an air bubble cauld cause noise but its coming from this aluminum tank. The tank has a hose that is runniing to the overflow tank.

its worth a try

Hi Tabs1. I have a different take on your post. Why ignore the noise if it concerns you? Call Chuck Tator on your cell phone. After explaining your concern to him, hold your cell phone close to the noise. If Chuck can do so by the noise alone, he will tell you whether you need to be concerned. If not, you can drive it to his dealership and let him take a look. Congrats on the new Viper.

DRAINING COOLING
SYSTEM
WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE ENGINE BLOCK
DRAIN PLUGS, COOLANT PRESSURE BOTTLE
CAP, OR OPEN THE RADIATOR DRAINCOCK,
WHEN THE COOLING SYSTEM IS HOT AND UNDER
PRESSURE BECAUSE SERIOUS BURNS FROM
COOLANT CAN OCCUR.
When servicing the cooling system, it is essential
that coolant does not drip onto the accessory drive
belt and/or pulleys. Shield the belt with shop towels
before working on the cooling system. If coolant contacts
the belt or pulley, flush both with clean water.
(1) Remove coolant bottle pressure cap (Fig. 4).
(2) Raise vehicle on hoist.
NOTE: For access to radiator draincock, it is necessary
to remove the front extension belly pan (Refer
to 23 - BODY/EXTERIOR/BELLY PAN - REMOVAL)
(Fig. 5).
(3) Open radiator draincock located at the lower
left side of radiator (Fig. 23).
(4) Remove the engine block drain plug(s).
STANDARD PROCEDURE - FILLING COOLING
SYSTEM
CAUTION: Do not use well water, or suspect water
supply in cooling system. Use only a 50/50 mixture
of the specified ethylene glycol type antifreeze/coolant
and distilled water. (Refer to LUBRICATION &
MAINTENANCE/FLUID TYPES - DESCRIPTION).
NOTE: Cooling system fill procedure is critical to
overall cooling system performance.
For cooling system capacity, (Refer to LUBRICATION
& MAINTENANCE - SPECIFICATIONS -
FLUID CAPACITIES).
(1) Close radiator draincock.
(2) Install engine block drain plugs.
(3) Attach one end of a 6.35 mm (0.250 in.) ID
clear hose that is approximately 1200 mm (48 in.)
long, to the bleed screw (Fig. 6).
(4) Route hose away from the accessory drive belt,
drive pulleys and cooling fan. Place the other end of
hose into a clean container. The hose will prevent
coolant from contacting the accessory drive belt when
bleeding the system during the refilling operation.

M
AIR BLEED SCREW BE OPENED BEFORE ANY
COOLANT IS ADDED TO THE COOLING SYSTEM.
FAILURE TO OPEN THE BLEED SCREW FIRST
WILL RESULT IN AN INCOMPLETE FILL OF THE
SYSTEM.
(5) Open the cooling system bleed screw (Fig. 6).
(6) Pour a 50/50 mix of Mopart Antifreeze/Coolant,
5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula and distilled water into
the coolant pressure bottle (Fig. 7).
(7) Slowly fill the cooling system until a steady
stream of coolant flows from the hose attached to the
bleed screw (Fig. 6).
(8) Close the bleed screw and continue filling system
to the top of the COLD FILL RANGE (Fig. 8).
(9) Remove hose from bleed screw.
(10) Install cap on coolant pressure bottle.
(11) Start engine and run until it reaches operating
temperature.
(12) If removed, install front belly pan (Refer to 23
- BODY/EXTERIOR/BELLY PAN - INSTALLATION).
NOTE: The engine cooling system will push any
remaining air into the coolant bottle within about an
hour of normal driving. As a result, a drop in coolant
level in the pressure bottle may occur.
CLEANING
Drain, flush, and fill the cooling system at the
mileage or time intervals specified (Refer to LUBRICATION
& MAINTENANCE/MAINTENANCE
SCHEDULES - DESCRIPTION). If the solution is
dirty, rusty or contains a considerable amount of sediment,
clean and flush with clean water. Care should
be taken in disposing of the used engine coolant from
your vehicle. Check governmental regulations for disposal
of used engine coolant.

One other comment. The 08/09 tranny generates quite a bit of gear rattle. It is descibed in your owner's manual. It can sound like a number of things including a tapping sound. One way to see if this is what it is is to do the following:

1. Sit in the car with the engine on, in neutral, at idle while stopped. If it makes the noise, go to step two below.

2. If it makes the sound, gently push the shift lever slightly forward just until the synchros start to engage. Do not shift into another gear. If the noise stops or greatly decreases, Then it is most likely gear rattle.

Last night after a drive I put her in the garage and let it run with the hood open again and climate control off. the noise is definately coming from that aluminum tank shaped thing on the driver side engine with the bleeding valve. Im gonna call Tator later. Thanks guys.

Sounds to me like you are hearing the purge solenoid for the evaporative emissions system. It is right in the small space between the cross bar and radiator hose, attached to the inner fender structure. Also, you may be hearing the lifters tapping.
