A confusing series of events sent a Farmville man to the hospital and totaled a high-end sports car.

At approximately 9 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to a crash on the far end of North Main Street in Farmville. Police arrived on scene to find a wrecked 2001 Dodge Viper and a man that had been struck by a vehicle.

As the story unfolded, things became less and less clear. The owner of the Viper claimed that an unknown man wrecked the car and escaped on foot, leaving him to face the consequences. Another driver passing by stopped to lend assistance. He told the Messenger that he stopped his vehicle on the opposite side of the road from the Viper, put on his 4-way flashers, and walked across the road to see if anyone was injured. As he stood on the side of the road, a passing Lincoln Town Car struck him with a side mirror.

The injured man was transported to Centra Southside Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Town Car was not charged.

Virginia State Police Trooper H.L. Eames responded to the accident. After his investigation, he charged the owner of the Viper, Gregory S. Simpson, 36, of Rice, Va., with reckless driving. Simpson was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt.

So a friend of his took the car out for a joy ride with him and wrecked the Viper and left the scene? Interesting...

Wow, this one could have gone very wrong for the guy that stopped to help. I guess he forgot rule #1 when helping at night...you're invisible to motorists--act accordingly.

Maybe it was a combination of old tires and a newbie driver and next thing you know, your plowing a field.

heh, not saying his story is untrue. But the seatbelt mark on his chest will tell :)

Never makes sense to lie to about accidents. Can only make you a criminal, might as well say nothing.

I never understand why if you wreck your car by yourself and it doesn't involve anyone else. Why would you get charged for wreckless? Does there have to be obvious proof that you were speeding excessively or being dangerous?
