Hi Guys

Had the Viper stored away for the winter and tried to start it and the battery was dead so I charged the battery and the viper still won't start, if I give it gas it starts and runs but if I let go off the gas it shuts down.

Do you think I need to reset the alarm with the ignition key swtich in the glove box, do you think because teh battery died that the alarm is not allowing the engine to stay running?

Thanks

If you have a Gen III it might be in theft or hibernation mode, which will not allow the car to start. I have a Gen II and a friend with a Gen III asked me to start his. He was overseas and the car had not been started in a few months, so I wanted to have it running for him when he got home. I didn't know about the new features on a Gen III and spent 2 days charging it and I replaced battery terminals and battery.

Check your owners manual.

Get a new battery. While you're at it, get this also:

Online Shopping

Sure, you can get it cheaper on Ebay, but why not support a vendor who supports us?

I've gone through 2 batteries in the last year. Both after hibernating in the winter. I used a trickle charger from NAPA after the first battery died. After doing a quick search on the forum, I ordered a charger from JonB yesterday. :) Based on other users posts, I hope to get many years out of the current battery.

Hi
I charged up the battery its all good its holding its charge the batter was replaced back in November of 05. I the car cranks no problem but I have to give it gas to keep it running or it will shut down.

Its a 2000 RT/10 do you think I need to reset the alarm using the ignition swtich located in the glove box.

Even though it cranks, the battery still may be low and these cars act real funny when the batt. is low. You can try to reset the computer(disconnect the batt. or the 3 wire bundles are the PCM). The reset the alarm. That might work for ya, but I still think it's the battery.

If the car is running I don't think the alarm is in the equation any more.

Maybe your Idle Air Control motor is sticking?

I am 283% sure it is your battery. :D

Like I said earlier, I just replaced my battery 2 days ago and ordered the batter tender from JonB. On the three occasions I replaced my battery, my car would fire right up. However, when coasting to a stop, the car would die. I would have to constantly rev it just to keep it running. I bought the Duralast Gold from AutoZone about 3 years ago. They've given me a new battery for free on both other occasions and started the 3 year warranty over on each one. Based on other posts, it doesn't matter what brand of battery you get. If inactive, your battery will die.

Don't bother to have your battery tested, as it will probably show as being good. AutoZone tested my battery out when I brought it in a few days ago and told me the battery was good. He suggested I get a new alternator. I politely told him I was sure that it was the battery. After installing the new battery later on, all is back to normal.

I inserted the key in the alarm reset iginition in the glove box of the viper turning left and right and then restarted the viper and now the viper starts right up. I guess it was the alarm all along.

Good to hear...common problem and solution. I think that some of us were thrown off a litle by our incorrect interpretation of "... and the viper still won't start, if I give it gas it starts and runs but if I let go off the gas it shuts down."...noting that with an alarm issue, it generally "fires" then shuts down, but will not "run".

Glad you're up in running.

YES indeed, either LEFT or RIGHT (spring loaded) no need to do both ways.

and to ensure your battery lasts more than 2 years, use a B.T.+

a MUST if you sometimes store the car for 21-28days + or shorter if vehicle is ALARMED
