Route 66

Is there enough of Route 66 left to handle an invasion of Vipers (could the Vipers handle the road condition)? I've always wanted to cruise Route 66 from Chicago to LA and am affraid I'm about 30-40 years late. Anyway, I just thought I would ask if there is any interest in doing something like that in a non-VOI year?

I'm in sounds like a great road trip! We have a portion of "66" just south of us.

I just drove a chunk of it a couple of weeks ago in New Mexico. I can' t speak for the other states, but the roads in New Mexico are very smooth and well taken care of....not one pothole or busted up roadway like we have in Calif. It would be a high speed cruisers dream.

Now the bad part is depending on what area you're in, there is Hiway Patrol, Sheriffs, Local cops and Indian reservation law enforcement (or a combination of all of them) more than willing to hand out tickets, and driving everything from sedans to pickups to SUV's.

If I had the chance, I would do it in a heartbeat. Met up with a group of 20 guys from Northern Europe that rented Harleys in LA and are driving the entire length.

Although driving the entire length would be cool, maybe having one group start in Chicago and another group starting from LA ......and meet up somewhere in the middle for a big get together.

Then those that want to continue can road trip back either way, still with a group of Vipers. Might solve the time issue many seem to have.

Make it happen, sounds like fun.

I live in Elk City, Oklahoma which is the mid way point between Amarillo, Texas and Oklahoma City. We have a Route 66 Museum here and there is always people stopping here for a quick visit on their trips.

I know the roads from Oklahoma City to Albuquerque, New Mexico are in really nice shape with maybe 20 miles or less of "harsh" road conditions. And then from Albuquerque to Flagstaff the roads are pretty decent with nothing major. I'd be up for a cruise or at least a meeting or something.

I've always wanted to do that trip also. We ship cars to Cali and drive north. Maybe for a Gen V release party???

I drove a lot of it this summer on the way from San Diego to Columbia MO. Santa Rosa New Mexico is cool, with a bunch of old hotels and gas stations, but most are boarded up. Did stop at a Rte 66 museum there that was cool. Also stopped at the one Jance mentioned in Elk City, OK. It is a rendition of a small town with school, church,bank etc and is a really fun stop if you get the chance. Was also blown away at some of the visitor centers/ rest stops when entering TX, OK and MO. Fancy dancy for roadside bathrooms complete with rte 66 memorabilia.

My friend David (VCA Ohio Region Webmaster) and I drove the trip from St Louis to the Santa Monica Pier this summer in my Prowler. It was the greatest road trip I've ever been on. What we didn't see on the way out, we saw on the way back. It took me months to plan out all the stops, hotels, etc., but what a trip!!!


Our first stop was the World's Largest Rocking Chair. I think it was 6AM. LOL

Thanks for the input guys, love to hear about the other Route 66 trips. I'm not really sure how to approach this on a national club level, or even if this is something the national club would entertain/help organize? I had read on here where a member mentioned driving at Daytona Speedway was a 'bucket list' thing, and although only 49 it made me think. A route 66 trip has always been on my to-do list ever since I've loved sports cars/hot rods, I just never thought I would be fortunate enough to do it in our own Viper.

I'm 47 and it made me think. Staying at the old restored hotels, eating at cool restaurants, and all the small towns...... gosh I want to go again already.

The only problem with the Prowler I had on the whole trip was the tire pressure sensor system would go crazy after the outside temp reached 105+ degrees. At one time on the 66 route to Barstow the car's outside temp read 116 degrees.

A buddy and I back in the mid 90's drove my Corvette ZR-1 from St Louis to LA. We also wound up on the Santa Monica Pier and took some pictures. Most of the original road is now freeway but you are going the same route. For sure get a Route 66 tour guide as it will descibe in detail every mile and where to stop. and since the song Route 66 is one of the most recorded, bring of course several artists versions. We found MANY tourists from Europe as they evidently watch reruns of the original Route 66. witch leads then to 2 trivia questions...who wrote the song "Route 66"...and who starred in the original TV series and what were their names in the show?

If you want some cool pictures you need to stop in Shamrock, Texas. They have a couple of old gas stations. One of them was in the first Cars movie. It's the U-Drop Inn.
