5 or 6 point harness

Is the harness below a 5 or 6 point :dunno: Track Rats ... what's the diference as in pros/cons of each (I'm aware of the additional point thing :D)

6 point. A 5 point has a sub belt that would go straight down the front middle of the seat and would attach to the floor in front of the seat. Most knowledgable folks would say that 6 points are safer. Some might say that 6 points are less comfortable. I use 5 points as that's what I've used for a long time. There was a thread on here once about a rally driver that hit a tree or something while wearing 6 points, it did very bad things to his family jewels if I remember correctly. Links to pics would make you want to throw up. Morale of the story was that the belts stopped his body from moving forward but not what he had down below if you know what I mean. (Mods, hope this isn't too graphic) Not sure a 5 point harness would have been much better but it was reason enough for me to stick with the 5s.

6 point and the advantage is that you cannot slip under the belts in a crash if you are laying down.

Thanks Mark, I had thought even the 5 point harness had 1 strap between the legs vs. 2 straps to prevent that. Might as well go with the 6 points as you can't be too safe!

I guess either 5 or 6 points are equally difficult to get in and out of .... especially if I share the car with my wife who's at least 100# lighter? (we plan to sit on the harnesses when not on the track)

It is also worth checking with the driving club or organization sponsoring track events as some may require 6 Pt harness.

You can sit in my car with 6 points the next time you see me Alan (Belinda can as well if she is with you). Maybe someone else here in town has 5 points you could sit in.

I have run both five and six points.

I prefer the six points for a couple of reasons listed above and find them a bunch more comfortable than the five points.

Guys, think about the accident described above with only one lower belt in between your legs.

do you have a rollbar? Are viper roof's strong enough to not crush ya?

not much help to the original topic - i have only ever run 5 point in my race car.

Vipers and roll bars, don't leave home without one.

Yes, I have a roll bar in my ACR and in my convertible.

Autoform Roll bar also on the list of have to haves, roll hoops are worthless except for 'decoration'

Somewhere along the line I was told that racing harness (5 or 6) was not legal in Texas. Did I miss something here? If you're taking a street car out on the tack, is it OK with the local laws to run the same belt setup on the highways?

I remember that thread because I've been actively trying to forget it ever since.

Just use the stock belts on the street, and the harnesses at the track, it is easy to move the harnesses out of the way for street use.

I live in the DFW but I'll be joining my cousin this weekend at Houston C&C (if weather permits). I have an ACR with 5-points if someone wants to see how comfortable (or uncomfortable) they are.

FYI, regardless of local law it is dangerous to use harnesses on the street. You have limited mobility for turning your head and in the event of an accident or roll over the only thing that will absorb the impact and move is your head and neck. We always sell the full snap in systems so that they can easily be removed from the car for the street and the 6 pt sub strap over the front of the seat is not comfortable and can be very distracting while driving IMHO.

The driver, as I remember it, did not submarine. The car decelerated in an instant upon impact, presumably with a lot of g's. The driver's body (or it could have been the navigator) also stopped forward motion due to being strapped into the car with 6 point harnesses. Unfortunately the person's "jewels" did not stop forward motion as there was nothing securing them. They flew forward and emerged from their protective covering, if you know what I mean. It seemed at the time that the sub belt on a set of 5 points may have prevented this, but who really knows. All I can say is "Gross!"

Ask Mike and Karin, worked great for them too! The belts can be tucked away for street driving. Glad to hear your considering the Autoform, great roll bar!

I'll have to take another look at the Team Tech harnesses, that just might be the way to go and like Mark mentioned the snap ring kit is available.

I don't think getting my own Viper just yet is an option, unless yourself and Beth are looking to adopt :D

The 6 point teamtech belts allow you to sit on the sub straps so you dont have to change out for a racing seat, they are custom designed for the Viper. You can tuck them under the seat when not using.

If you were referring to what I said above I only meant hanging over the front of the seat when not in use. I know they have to go between the seat back and the bottom to work correctly.

I stopped bothering with those single digit safety harnesses. Those things are death traps. I installed an ultra high tech 87-point harness. It only costs $32,000 and the driver can't move any part of his body more than 1/8 of an inch but it is the latest and greatest in safety and no expense is too great for safety.

How about the Hans Solo light saber protection? That would have protected you from all....
