TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 7, 2012) -- In an effort to strengthen the GT2 class, the SCCA Club Racing Board announced the classification of Trans-Am Series Class 2 cars as well as many former Super Touring® Over cars.

To accomplish this, the current GT-2 spec lines have been revised for 2013. These changes came after more than a year of study by the GT Advisory Committee and by an ad hoc group of GT drivers, builders and car owners.

The new spec lines include revised weights and restrictors for existing GT-2 cars.

Ex-STO cars may be prepared to the 2012 STO rules, with the exception that tires are free in GT-2 within the STO wheel sizes. Specifications for these cars are now included in the race memo and may vary from 2012 STO specifications.

Trans-Am 2 cars may run in GT2 under TA2 rules and published spec lines, with the exception that tires are free in GT-2 within the TA2 wheel sizes. Regional GTA class cars may run in GT-2, but must make the changes necessary to comply with the TA2 rules.

The CRB apologizes for the late notice of the change, but the opportunity to embrace these cars became available as a result of a cascading set of rule changes from the Touring reclassification that was just completed.

Please go to http://www.scca.com/clubracing/content.cfm?cid=44472 to view the race memo that will include the new spec lines for all the GT-2 cars. The memo is available directly here: http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/ass ... 012-10.pdf

STO cars have been added to the GT2 class. The two groups are made up of very similar cars, Porsche 996 & 997s in STO and GT2, Vipers and Corvettes in STO, tube-frame full racecars in GT2, etc. There was a difference in tires; GT2 allows slicks, STO required DOTs.

Now the two classes are essentially combined, with the GT2 cars given some allowances to go faster. I think this is needed (I was consulted a bit about this issue) as the lap times at Road America were similar (2:15s +/-), the STO cars were stronger in the straights because of more HP, and the GT2 cars got through the turns because of better tires. Allowing the STO cars to run on slicks means the GT2 cars needed some help in the straight line department.

Personally, I think this is a great idea! There are a number of 996 & 997 Porsches running GT2 across the country; add any of our Vipers (Gen 3 and ACR-Xs), some Ferraris 430C that aren't in a Ferrari Club race, some old World Challenge GT Corvette, and we got ourselves a really cool race group.

The ACR-X is a really good car for this class. It must use a 60mm restrictor plate, but can run at 3,400 lbs provided the motor stays ACR-X stock. Wheels are limited to 18x11" front and 19x13" rear (18"s are OK), any gear ratio, clutch, shocks, springs, etc.

I'm thinking of pulling my ACR-X off the "for sale" market to run in this group. But doing a full season of Trans Am and this may be tough to fit. We'll see.

Hmmm are all year Porsche cups included? 2010+cups run 25's at road atlanta on yokos and the I think the fastest acr-x time was 26's on michelins. At road america may be more fair because the viper can own the straights but on shorter tracks with a restrictor dont know if that will work. I like the idea of many makes in the class though emulating alms.

Don't know the details of the GT2-spec Porsches. But I have been told there are faster slicks available out there than the Michelins we used in Viper Cup; those are endurance tires and pretty hard.

2009 997 is the last year allowed in club racing, the 997's have to weigh more than the 996's, but all are welcome in the SCCA GT2 class

Oh ok, that makes more sense. Will be some good back and forth battles. I can see the STO type cars dominating at tracks like Road America with longer straights and the GT2 type cars being better at tracks like Barber. Great idea to mix these up IMO. As for the rest of the decision making.........
