The 918 is a great car, but it cost 850k not the type of car you will see at the track. The new ACR needs more HP when it comes out.

The car is truely something else from a technology standpoint. Not the biggest Porsche fan, but respect their engineering. Time to build a wicked ACR and retake the ring.

The ACR-X was 7:03? SRT, please come back with a more HP bella machina and take the record back!

P.S.: at that price tag the term "production car" gets squishy to say the least...

The Viper will not hold that record again.
These companies are willing to throw unlimited funding into developing the latest high tech systems and put it in million dollar cars.
Cars that they will sell 20 of. No way SRT can match that.
Even at 700 HP there is no way the ACR could knock off 14 seconds with a six speed manual and be street legal.

You speak truth. The scale is a bit slanted to say the least. Doesn't mean we can't at least get close to that time. I've said it before that I think the new ACR will be capable of a sub 7 minute lap.

Keep in mind that $850,000 Porsche also had an $84,000 option of carbon fiber and titanium. It's basically a million dollar car.
Would love to see build a no holds barred ACR and go over there and clean up shop. Gonna need some good tires though!

What about the electronic gimmicks in the car?

Was he shifting at all?

A computer may drive the car along the limit with all the sensors (and a map of the track!) faster than any race driver can...

This. At what price point is it no longer "production".
What? Price has nothing to do with if is "production" or not.

It is unreal the car ran that on road tires. I really don't see how the Gen V ACR could do the same. Slicks, sure, maybe. But road ready tires? I don't see how it is possible.

As ViperJon says, SRT is competing with the deepest pockets out there.

I'd love to see it happen, but realistically I don't see how it can.

I agree, Price is not a factor in the Ring wars. Sure there are better bang for the buck cars out there, but the record looks like it goes to the highest bidder. Nice run anyway.

I'm okay with a technological marvel like the 918 taking the title. Bravo to those involved, and those who funded the project. The fact that the ACR held the title, and did it for a long while, says a lot about these "Vipers that are only good in a straight line." That ACR sure shut up the critics that always claimed the Viper didn't handle. The fact was that they simply couldn't handle the Viper.

From my understandings McLaren has a car that will make this Porsche look like it's parked at the track. OF course is it production..... Apparently to some people if you can see it then it's production.

They are planning to build 918 of them. About 500 have been ordered. How many ACRs were built? ACR-Xs? Somewhere between 25 and 50. The 918 is a production car. I just can't afford it.

They should start a "class" system, kind of like all other sports, boxing etc, heavyweight, middle weight and so on but do it by $$$$

We should have the

under $250K class

$250K - $500K class

$500K and over

etc.

Then we see bang for the buck, the price differences are just getting too large to have it be anywhere near an equal playing field but more that one champion exists

Damn. You win. IF I had the money, I'd just buy more Vipers :).

I wouldn't buy one either. I love American engined cars, Vipers in particular. Jim Rohn said something a long time ago. "It isn't too expensive. You just can't afford it." I hate him and love him for those words.

For $750K more than a Viper, they can have their 15 seconds and the record at the 'Ring.

It's so unlikely that you'll ever see one on the road in your town that it's an irrelevant car, same with the La Ferrai or the McLaren P1.
I'm more worried about the next Gen GT-R or ZO6, those thing are going to be absolute rockets and you WILL see them on the road and local club tracks.

I am not a Porsche guy at all! But that is one sweet Porsche.

I believe SRT can reclaim the record if they put in a full effort. They already know what it takes to run 7:03.

The Porsche is an engineering marvel, the fact it's a hybrid is even more mind boggling. I agree on the GTR and Vettes, they are the players in the Vipers game. It would be cool to see SRT throw out all the interior crap and make a bare bones racer. Imagine what you could do with the money they spent on all the nice insides. Shave a few hundred pounds and make sure it has enough downforce to overcome the fact it doesn't have a computer driving in, and finally uncork the motor.

I don't think there is anything even close to the Viper time without a power adder

The ACR needs active aero. Ring is too big and straights too long to be competitive with a 180'ish top end and a 5000+ pound car (at speed). Adding some of the techno stuff to the ACR would make it a $300k car. But adding all that tech to a Viper is like producing a 4000 pound Lotus or a Rolls Royce with a 6 cyl.... Something's I feel simply shouldn't be done.

The engineers at SRT could build a Viper that would be competitive at with the million dollar hybrids. It would probably clock in under 150k as well. That proposal was shot down because the business plan would call for all Vipers => ACR.

You have to recall that all these big players...Porsche, GM, Nissan, BMW...have offices and people at the 'ring. Chrysler doesn't, yet they rolled out a couple of ACRs a few times and cleaned up. The ante has been upped with these super expensive limited edition cars, but it doesn't mean that the Viper was automatically kicked out of the running.

Management at Chrysler just has to let SRT engineers loose for a little bit... :D

Agreed. The $110,000 ACR-X turned 7:03.

Take a Gen V, ignore the expensive paint, fancy interior options remove the brakes, seats, suspension, wheels and tires (and the cost associated with them) Add some dedicated track (street legal) equip and aero and have at it. With some thought and effort I am sure SRT can beat million dollar super cars for pennies on the dollar.

Lexus LFA did 7:14 and afaik it doesn't have a power adder and it used a lesser tire than the ACR I believe. The G4 ACR is a legend in its own time but now SRT will have to add some serious engineering to be at the top at the Nurbergring again.

The big names are serious now and it seems they are tired of taking the performance backseat to the lesser super cars like they have been to the likes of the Viper, ZR1, GTR etc.

I'm a bit pessimistic about SRT after Test Car-gate but I'm hoping they pull out most of the stops on the ACR. would be a much needed shot in the arm after the recent media coverage.

And we now are sounding like the mustang/civic crowd. The irony.

Most people buying 1 million dollar cars can afford those cars much better than the people buying the 100k viper. Fact.

"My 35k 2003 cobra with a KB, pulley, tune and headers is smoking Vipers."
"Well it's still just a mustang."

"Well my 100k Viper with 20k in mods is beating million dollar super cars"
"Yeah well it's still a Dodge."

Et al.

I am not talking about modding one, I am talking about SRT releasing a new model. (ACR, ACR reboot, whatever you want to call it) Hence the "I am sure SRT can beat million dollar super cars for pennies on the dollar"
