sometimes its really hard to get the shifter into 1st gear or reverse, it dosn't smoothly go in and i have to use a lot of force for it to go in. why is this?

Speculation only; sounds like the clutch is not fully releasing

I agree with the clutch theory but you should have it looked at for sure since thats not normal.

pretty normal for a gen 3 particularly in cold temps....i did have one trick for reverse-push the lever all the way to the right like you are attempting to go in reverse, then release back to the middle then immediately shift to the right and into reverse.. seemed to work for me

Cant explain why it would be hard to go into first - and if it was only reverse - I'd take a look at the reverse lockout solenoid - which does have a tendancy to fail.

I have a 2004 and it has always been hard to put in reverse. Wants to go into 5th way easier than going into reverse. I always thought this was normal. Never had a hard time going into first though.

Could be a few things but typically first is slightly more difficult than the other gears. When that happens bring the clutch pedal out and in again and it usually synchonizes the tranny. If you continue to have to force it then the problem lies elsewhere.

Same with reverse. Additionally with most reverse shifts it requires a bit of pressure downward to put into gear. This is a safety measure.

2006 shouldn't be having any problems unless the previous owner didn't know how to use a stick.

I actually went and spoke to a viper tech at a dealer and he said its normal but just let out the clutch and push back in and its fine. I got a trick that if you need 1st put it in 2nd first then first and reverse i just quick put it in 5th then reverse. Its just because of the long gears as what the viper tech told me.

honestly I think its from letting out the clutch out sooner before you get the chance to through it in 3rd at least thats my reason.

Maybe it's jammed because it's a Spaceballs viper? Raspberry flavor?

Sorry I just couldn't resist. Please carry on with the comments and suggestions.:D
