06 coupe vs C6 Z06

OK, I tried searching for Z06 and no matches came up. Not sure if that's too few letters?

Anyhow, I'm trying to find GOOD data showing how the C6 Z06 compares with a stock 06 coupe. Would be great to see the comparison showing from a roll, in a corner, on a track, etc.

I'm not doing this to say which car is better. I'm trying to figure out a proper comparison when I hit the track with a Z06 buddy in two weeks. IE, if he is faster than me on a straight (on the track) is it because his car is faster or is it because his corner exit speed was better. We're both trying to improve on our personal best lap times.

I believe the Z06 may be a little faster, because I believe it's lighter, 99 out of 100 in my area are not completely Stock,& I know quite a few of them. They just don't admit it. Very nice color Viper.

Everything seems to point to the Z06 being a lighter, faster car on paper. Just didn't know how it translates in real life.

I tried my buddy's car for a few laps, and was almost able to match my own Viper lap times (I have lots of seat time in my own car, not his). I'm thinking that I would be able to go faster in the Z06 given some time in it. Too bad the car doesn't do anything for me visually (looks like every other vette out there). I'm 80% performance, 20% looks :)

On a road course it's going to boil down to DRIVER'S EXPERIENCE..

I have seen people in 325is BMWs smoke others in "big cars" over at Buttonwillow Raceway..

Both cars are close on the road course. The Viper's advantage is the better brakes, and suspension..

The Z06's Good year F1 tires are not that great either..

I've had both, so let me put it this way; it's a driver's race. On the straight, he has a slight accelearation advantage, primarily due to rear gearing (3.46 to your 3.07). However your braking power is superior, and you can outbrake him on corner entry. On stock rubber, you have more lateral grip than he has; if you're both on either PSs or slicks i would guess you're close to even. Coming off the corner, it depends on which of you can put the power down more smoothly. Bottom line, he has a slight advantage, primarily due to weight, aerodynamics, and that rear gear; but, if his is an 06, he's going to be a bit less confident at the limit, especially on a track surface that's not perfectly groomed, because the shock damping is too fast, and the car feels twitchy in high speed corners. On stock tires, I ran close to the same in both cars, but always felt more comfortable in the Viper; that may be as much personal preference and my driving style as anything else, however.

That is the exact type of answer I was looking for, thanks! We'll both be on r-compounds. I'm surprised our brakes are better. I'll be running stoptech rotors and mintex pads though so I'm guessing I'll really have the advantage there?

I've always wondered if I would be faster in a car with traction control, not because of the actual traction control but because I'd feel "safer" in the back of my mind at the limit.

For a data point, I have a bolt-on mod Gen II that is probably a bit quicker than a stock Gen III and one night by my house on a very safe street I lined up with a Z06. We left turned into the situation and he went well before me. Once I hit it the gap stayed even or was shortened slightly past 100 mph. Basically a dead heat with any advantage to me. My guess is a stock Gen III and a stock Z06 are a dead heat in a straight line.

Most of the videos I've found have the Z06 being a little faster in a straight line. Every once in a while, I'll see the opposite but it's hard to figure out who is lying about being "stock."

What track are you guys running? If its a tight track.Then the long straight advantage will be useless..

No road course, but everything else..I have never put the 06 on a road course like VIR...but I would not hesitate to try it if given the chance. I feel the Viper would be an advantage...

All I know is that with 5 minutes of seat time, I felt REALLY comfortable in the Z06. It's an awesome car. I think it would be easier to drive fast for a new driver compared to a Viper.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Viper and wouldn't trade it for a Z06. But, I wouldn't mind adding a Z06 eventually.

I have both cars, and don't see the need to BS or be biased about either.

The C6Z is faster than a stock pre-08 SRT Viper. The C6Z is also easier to road race, it feels more point-n-shoot than the Viper does. Stock tires on the Z06 are better than the stock '06 Viper tires too.

Here are what my two cars ran, 100% showroom stock

2006 Viper coupe - 12.0 @ 119 mph
2009 Z06 - 11.5 @ 125 mph

That is a huge difference in trap speed. I was somewhat shocked the Z06 ran so well, it was a hot day too.

To cure this problem, I put the Paxton on the Viper. :)

I also have both, an 08 ZO6 and an 09 Vert. I think, without any track experience that the ZO6 gets going faster. I also think I enjoy driving my Vert more, it is my first convertible, it gets lots more attention than my Vettes (and my ZO6 is rare - signed & numbered limited edition 505 made total worlwide). The Vette is tamer, or shall I say more refined. It is more forgiving and will kind of look out for you, the Viper is more of a your own your own, so be careful. Each is a different beast, when I want to take my wife out, it is in the vette. When my 7 year old daughter wants to go for a ride, it is in the Viper. You can't go wrong with either.

First, the drag strip: The original deadly dangerous Viper danced and hopped down the drag strip in such a squirmy fashion 12 years ago that it took an unmarried, no-mortgage tester with nothing to lose to set our fastest time. Compared to that one, the SRT10 is a dream. Just jump in, hammer the gas, squeal the tires and go.

We got our quickest times after only a few tries and repeated them all day long. The Viper posts a 4.20-second 0-to-60-mph time and the quarter-mile in 12.37 seconds at 117.3 mph. That’s an AutoWeek Viper record, of course, but just better than the GTS of 1996 and only four-tenths quicker than the first Viper roadster. Maybe you could argue Viper hasn’t progressed as much as it might have. Or maybe you could say there isn’t much room to progress, given how quick this car was when it was new. Nonetheless, our best time with the SRT10 coupe falls well behind Dodge’s claim the car can run to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

Where there is room for improvement in both of these cars is the gearbox, the six-speed Tremec T56 manual. The difference is the transmission sits right under the driver’s elbow in the Viper and way out at the back axle in the Corvette. And yet we prefer shifting the Corvette because of its shorter, lighter and more precise throws.

If they could knock out one of those gears we could have gotten to 60 mph quicker in both cars, since neither really gets to that speed in first gear without laborious experimentation. Also, we would appreciate it if they could do away with that ludicrous 1-4 skip-shift feature—the thing has been around since the 1980s and is irritating as hell. And the skip-shift doesn’t even eliminate the $3,000 gas-guzzler tax on the Viper!

Back to the drag strip, where skip-shift is irrelevant:

While Viper is perfectly at home being hammered on the strip, the Corvette is a mess as far as balancing wheelspin, torque and clutch take-up. While it ultimately goes faster, much faster to 60 mph and through the quarter-mile, the Corvette demands a steep learning curve to pull it off. There is so much wheelspin that you can’t use full throttle anywhere in first gear, and you have to be mighty judicious about using it in higher gears if you want to get a fast time. We actually got the quickest Corvette acceleration times with a full tank of gas, which transfers weight rearward onto the drive wheels. Maybe we could have used sandbags and gone even quicker?

Working hard to eliminate wheelspin, 60 mph comes in 3.91 seconds, with the quarter-mile arriving in 12 seconds flat at 121.7 mph. So at the drag strip, the Corvette is the king.

But don’t grab that crown just yet, Best Vette Yet.

Viper outbrakes the Vette by five feet, taking 107 feet to stop from 60 mph compared to the Vette’s 112 feet.

Again, the Viper always outruns the Corvette on our slalom. Don’t forget, engineers and designers spend as much time making these cars turn as they do making them go straight. We took the Viper out first.

Hammering around the cones of our slalom, we found remarkably quick, precise turn-in and tremendous grip. The holding power of the Viper far exceeds our abilities to squeeze the most out of it. We recorded 46.8 mph, but think there might have been even more left on the asphalt.

Jumping immediately into the Corvette, the difference is huge. Turn the wheel and it sort of mushes over in the direction you want it to. This is by no means SUV/minivan mushy, but compared to the Viper it feels like a wet paper bag. Then at the very limit, when oversteer is getting too much, the stability control kicks in. One tester didn’t find it intrusive, but the other driver did. The Vette’s speed of 45.6 mph is still, as it always has been, below the mighty Viper.

On the skidpad the Viper rules again, scoring the first 1.00-g laps we’ve recorded. The Corvette’s 0.97 g isn’t bad.

So which car wins?

If we were to give an award for Most Improved, it would go to the Corvette Z06. With a new aluminum chassis and lightening throughout, combined with a sophisticated engine, it is leaps ahead of any Corvette. This SRT10 is better than earlier Vipers, but not by that much.

If we were to give an award for Most Livable, again it would go to the Corvette. We could base that on the lack of cockpit roasting alone. But the ease of shifter operation, combined with the general comfort of the cabin, puts the Chevrolet ahead.

If this were just a drag strip match, we would grudgingly give the win to the Corvette, which makes us work harder than ever for the numbers we got.

But if we were to take one of these cars straight off the showroom floor and go race it in showroom stock, at an auto­cross or in the 24 Hours of Whatever, we would choose the Viper. We can’t help but feel that without that stability program on the Z06 we would be in big trouble all day long through the slalom.

Which leads us to the winner, the new Corvette Z06.

OTHER VIEWS

I prefer the Z06, though the SRT10 would sure wake up your senses on a short blast. The numbers are so close that there’s little in it, except for one number: The Chevy holds a strong price advantage. Some might choose the Viper anyway on styling and perhaps exclusivity, though neither car reaches far enough on the design side. A more distinct styling statement for the Z06 would undercut Viper’s exclusivity edge, but even as it sits I think the Corvette Z06 wins this comparo hands down. - KEVIN A. WILSON

Driving the Viper coupe and roadster back to back reveals just how good the new Viper is. The stiffness in the chassis and the corresponding better handling characteristics of the coupe are telling. This is backed by our slalom and skidpad tests. The Viper remains a beast demanding your respect at every driving moment. The Z06 is equally a stud in the performance jungle, but it looks too much like a standard Vette. If I were in this market I’d spend the extra bucks for the Viper. - ROGER HART

I wouldn’t buy a Viper over a Z06. The Corvette is faster, more comfortable, and $20,000 less expensive. Frankly, I’d take the Z06 even if the cars were priced equally. The Viper is more exclusive and flashier, but the Z06 looks good, too. Ultimately, it’s about the driving, and I feel more at home in the Corvette. That doesn’t mean it’s too easy to drive, though. In fact, the ease with which the Z06 snaps its rear tires loose means you need to be careful with your inputs. IMO, there is no feel in my 2010 Z06, suspension too soft, and the steering is numb due to too much power steering. The brakes are ok, but not as good as my Viper. The Viper is a just more of a race car. MORE SOLID, and a better car/driver feedback..

Like a couple of people have already mentioned, on the street, anything can happen. The chances of two drivers having the EXACT same skills are extremely rare.

Now, in the case both drivers are equally skilled (or both **** equally), the Z06 is going to be not just a little faster, but a lot faster. It will be quicker on corners, braking and acceleration and top end.

IMO, there is no feel in my 2010 Z06, suspension too soft, and the steering is numb due to too much power steering. The brakes are ok, but not as good as my Viper. The Viper is a just more of a race car. MORE SOLID, and a better car/driver feedback..

Like you, I have the Z and the Viper. I am in complete agreement with you. Viper has a way better feel than the Z. My Z will outrun the Viper on the straights due to better gearing - but with a lot of seat time in the Viper, it could keep up with the Vette. The Vette is just an all around better DD, but for a true sports car feel, nothing comes close to the Viper. The Vette feels like a Cadillac compared to the Viper, which feels more like a true track car. Ride /suspension comfort is right up there with the Z, but the passenger compartment in the Viper leaves much to be desired. Ride feedback goes to Viper all day long!:2tu:

I'd have to agree with the Taliwag - the Z will be faster all day long...just because it's made for that. It has way better bottom end response and is over 10% lighter than the Viper...but the Viper is just way sexier. Something about 600HP is also hot, even if the advantage goes to the Z for quickness. I guess a 355 rear end could solve that issue though...if you could get past the insane amount of wheel spin with that setup.

whoa guys now hold up a minute...a c6z06 is faster...no doubt ..your talking a 11.9 at 121 mph Viper vrs a 11.6 at 125 mph C6Z06.....BUT THEY ARE QUITE EVENLY MATCHED ON A ROAD COURSE...I MADE THIS LIST A YEAR OR TWO AGO WHEN SOMEONE ELSE AKED THE SAME QUESTION...COMPLETE WITH LINKS FOR YOUR VIPER VS Z06 HANDLING ACCELERATION QUERIES

LETS NOT GET THIS TWISTED...this is a 2006 vrs c6z06..a 121 mph car verses a 125 mph car...But the 600 HP Viper is a 128 mph car and every vid shows it jogging away from the C6Z06..

Keep it on track so to speak..2008 Viper dust the C6Z06 in every way imaginable

their you go...cant get any better than that..the fastest 2003-2006 viper guys against the fastest c6z06 guys.....but again...the vette is just a bit faster...126...127 mph????/Vrs 122-123 mph ( highest ever srt10 was 124 mph highest ever c6z06 was 128 mph

Man the C6Z06 just dusted the viper at the strip this time..But look at those track times. Pretty impressive that a car that was significantly slower at the strip was within 2 tenths of the Z06..Wonder wich one handles better?

This time The C6Z06 barely edges out the SRT10 vert in the quarter mile with a 12.2 at 118 VS the Vipers 12.3 at 116 mph...But on the road course they both pull 1.19.5 second lap times..The review then says that they preferred lapping the SRT10 vert over the C6Z06 due to it track mannerisms

Finally the c6Z06 beats the SRT10 by 1.2 seconds around a road course...So out of the "HEAD2HEAD"reviews I could find..Viper3...Vette2...and 1 tie...So please just remember that the next time you wanna say how the "old" SRT10's cant handle...Well theve proven the be faster than your C6Z06 more than one half the time during head to head comparisons around the road course/slalom...

Great info guys, exactly what I was looking for. Sounds like the Vette should be a little faster in the hands of the same driver who can push both cars to the limit. However, driver skill probably is the biggest factor.

Looks like I'll be covered at the track... if my friend in the Z06 is faster, I'll say he's supposed to be faster. If I'm faster, I'll say I'm a better driver lol!

EXACTLY as a great driver in something like a GEN 2 will beat and average driver in a Z06 or Gen 4 giving up power and added weight no problem at the strip.driver for driver one guy (Jamie Furman )basically holds all the records as indicated a Gen 4 Viper and Z06 are EXTREMELY CLOSE .

LETS NOT GET THIS TWISTED...this is a 2006 vrs c6z06..a 121 mph car verses a 125 mph car...But the 600 HP Viper is a 128 mph car and every vid shows it jogging away from the C6Z06..

Keep it on track so to speak..2008 Viper dust the C6Z06 in every way imaginable
On a road course, indeed, but not on the strip...advantage still goes to the Z06. Most drivers can't get the Viper down to the same times as the Z on the strip, but I agree that it does have the potential to beat it;, JF did, once, in the Vert that I happen to own now. On the street, the Z trounces the Viper in a straight line - any year. that's just the way it is...but I still love my Viper.
