Backed car out of garage and made a big clunk... And had no power steering got out and opened the hood and the dame crank pulley fell right off!! So jacked it up and cleaned up everything red lock righted the bolt and torqued it too 200 was the most I could get out of my torque wrench I know it calls for 250. This ever happen to anyone else??? Glad it happens in the driveway!!

Roe has a kit to pin the crankshaft to prevent this... can be done in the car.

It happened to me on a red GTS. What a pita. Fortunately you were in your driveway. I was driving and lost ps, overheated, the whole mess.

ya they seem good plum crazy I moved it out of the way and wound it in first to make sure and back out on threads came out, I really soaked the lock tight to it, and cranked on it as hard as I could, I was thinking about it after if it happened on the road id be ordering a bolt lol, but all back together and seems good, car is a 02 gts!

****ing thing came off again today while I was driving it!! Got it towed to a buddy's shop see what they can do with it... Disgusting !

But, you didn't properly torque it ! Yes, I know that you put Loctite glue on it; but, what are the stresses involved?

Make sure that you verify that the crank snout exterior circumferance was not compromised by the dampener spinning on the crankshaft when the bolt was loose. If properly torqued, I would think that it would not need Loctite or the pin kit (if no added load on the belt from a supercharger.) However, I would think that if the mating surfaces on the crankshaft snout and the dampener are not "perfect", then the specified torque may not be sufficient to keep the dampener locked to the crankshaft. Hence the common recommendation to pin it.

You torqued it to ft lbs correct? Supercharger or not, just pin it. Hopefully your crank snout is fine and once you get it back together put a torque stripe or paint mark on the bolt head so you can check for slippage every time you change the oil.

Will a standard drill bit get the job done, or are the crank and dampener heat treated?
the kit from roe comes with the necessary drill bit and jig to do it correctly.. im sure the crank is hardened because it takes a couple mins to drill each hole. Just be patient and accurate..

When I did my heads and cam on my Gen.1 I replaced the harmonic balancer also. I didn't have a torque wrench that went up high enough so I just used a breaker bar and put a 3 foot cheater pipe on it. It's plenty tight and haven't had any problems with it. I'd rather it be too tight than not tight enough.

So I called roe today and ordered a pin kit and he told me once the dampner comes off it's screwed so using it twice it's deff screwed so ordered a new balancer too and a new crank bolt too! I hope the end of te crank is allright too

why chrysler didn't use a key way on the crank is beyond me-never heard of a keyed balancer coming off a corvette-cheap way of doing it I guess

Just to be clear, GM hasn't keyed cranks since '96. So yes they fall off GM products as well.

Agreed 100%. Once the dampner has come off, it's time for a new one. Retightening a unit that spun off is foolish as it will never achieve the proper press fit.

well,that just proves my point-why not key the crank if they didn't come off when they were keyed and now there are problems with both GM and Dodge because they are not keyed-is it that hard to do to solve a problem that could possibly cause a lot of damage
