High Temp Paint for Side Sills

I am painting the Side Sills on an 05 with JohnB's High Flow Cats and Borla Exhaust. Is there special paint required to withstand the heat of the exhaust on the side sills of the GEN III's ? Thank you, John

Any high temp header paint on the inside will help. But it didn't work for me, even with fiberglass and heat shield installed.

Whenever I watch the Kindig TV show and see them paint the engine the same color as the car I always wish they would mention if that is the exact paint from the car, or something special to stand the heat. Exhaust is obviously hotter than the engine block, but one would think that on the heads right next to the headers would need to withstand similar temps to a Viper side pod. But they never discuss it!

An idea is to have the whole side sill piece coated in the ceramic coating that is used for headers, then paint the outside the body color. And to vent the front of the side sill so air flows through.

Don't know what kind of emissions testing they have in your area, but running no cats will cut the exhaust temp in half.....

High heat paint needs high heat cycles(baking) to cure correctly. It is not just spray it. Even brake caliper paint you need to 'bake' it.

Read the directions on any paint.

I have the car at a Paint shop in Ross Ohio, the gentleman who is painting it has been in business for 50 years and I trust him. MY viper tech here in Dayton was just mentioning it to me based on his experience. I am asking the body shop to paint the side sills and the front facia Body color but then the bottom of each, Paint them black, that is repairable more easily than the Copperhead. Not visible when standing next to the car without getting on the ground. At 16,000 miles, the front facia and the side sills were trashed. I was amazed. I was just wondering if there was a different paint people used for the side sills. Thanks!

I can only wonder where previous owners have been driving to chew up the paint on the sills that badly (assuming it's not you that was doing it :))

I bought my car from a guy who lived on a dirt road, and it's got some battle scars due to it, but the sills aren't in bad condition at all (with 40K miles / 65k kilometers)

My guess is the race track. Has Autoform Roll Bars and a 5 point Seat Belt configuration. Found under the, or in back of the front drivers seat when I bought it. Previous owner drove it 43 miles in 17 years, just trailering it to Shows. She, I am positive, had no idea of its previous history. 73 years old, and it was her "pretty orange car". I do not either, but some of the "battle Scars" on my car indicate she was raced. We've gone through it and it runs phenomenal, drives great (now) and will soon look like she should.

I've been thru this.

My Viper came from Houston Tx where the roads are nice and flat. It was slammed as low as possible. Scraping on crap SoCal roads made me crazy! Thanks to the KW ACR Coil Overs, raised it up to avoid the scraping. Adding insult to injury, the guys at the Busted Knuckle Club (where I was DIY'ing the maintenance) were required to put it on the lift. Their lift arms also added some scratches to the bottoms of the rocker panels.

I fixed the scrapes and scratches the best I could (minor filling & sanding) with this stuff from https://www.automotivetouchup.com/ Got a great VVO color match. 3 coats base color and 1 coat gloss clear. Check the color code for your car. Either GK3 or PK3 (according to their website). I only treated the area of the rocker panels under the car. While I was at it, also recoated the exhaust tip portals. I'm plenty happy with the results.

That looks great and great info! What paint did you use for the Exhaust Tip Portals ? Car looks killer. I may raise mine slightly as well. Our Roads here in Ohio are horrible. I did not get a Gen II as the last one rubbed everywhere we drove, dips in the road were not good for the front Facia. The Gen III at least sits a bit higher. Front (stock) shocks, one is leaking so I'll have to look into new shocks as well. Thanks!

I did this back in September 2021.. on the exhaust tip portals my notes say I used VHT Satin Black and VHT Gloss Clear Coat. I think the Gloss Clear Coat really made 'em shine like that. Purchased from AutoZone.

Yep, its called "Very Viper Orange (VVO)".
