Slightly modded Gen 1 engine, 415 hp, older versions had 400 hp. I believe that the intakes went to smooth tubes and K&N filters in '96, thus the 15 hp increase.

The horsepower increase in the '96 Rt was due to the rear outlet, less restrictive exhaust. Drive by noise standards were more easily met as the exhaust does not fire straight out like on a sidepipe car.

The 1996 Model year R/T10 is a unique Gen I car. The engine demonstrated the same 400 HP output, hence, the rear exhaust bumped it up to 415. There were over 200+ changes made to the vehicle in it's entirety making it a VERY improved (last year Gen I) roadster.

Ultimately, it was one of the best Gen I Roadsters.

Happy Motoring,

I believe I read in a past Viper Qtrly that a baffle in the intake box was removed in '96 and helped increase to 415hp.
