Another Freakin' Noise

Over the past several days, my '05 has developed a rattling noise that clearly eminates from the transmission tunnel. What makes it odd is that it isn't consistent with RPM or any particular gear. In 1st or 2nd, is seems to come on after about 2500 RPM. In all other gears, it starts around 1500 RPM. It doesn't matter if I'm accelerating like a middle-aged lady in a Vette, or if I'm balls-to-the wall; it always comes on in similar fashion, and it's frequency doesn't change. When I'm decelerating with the clutch disengaged, the noise will continue until the RPMs drop to nearly idle. It's generally erratic in nature, in that it isn't a constant rattle. I've done a search for similar issues, but uncovered nothing.

I would first get the car on a lift and look for loose things. Trans access panel, mounts, shifter itself? Eliminate the simple first then look at the transmission and drive line.
