I am finally ready to change my exhaust, but I am still concerned about the various systems available and the different sound that they will make. Having read most of the posts, I have not seen anything on removing the mufflers and replacing with straight pipe, removal of the x-pipe, and keeping the cats. This way you would not have to deal with the check engine light. Does anyone know what the end result would be, such as increase in HP/TQ, heat reduction, and what the sound would be like? My ultimate goal is to have a very deep sound without breaking my eardrums.

Thanks for any and all advise.

-O2 Sims will deal with check engine light. they are $100 and a breeze to install
-You have two options to quiet exhaust sound:
#1 Cats (highly restrictive)
#2 Mufflers (very low restriction)

Your pick...

And some advice, do not but into the "high-flow" cat [******]... there is only so much flow you will get out of a freaking foot-long honeycomb placed in the exhaust pipes.

Remove the cats, install a BIG muffler (I have Magnaflow 30") and if you want Vortex cones.... done deal. VERY deep rumble and loud at WOT.

Cheers.

My friend just removed 2 of my cats and mufflers, ran straight pipe but left crossover in. He has Corsa's on his and we wanted to try something different. It sounded great on accell, but it pops and crackels horribly loud on decel. It was soo bad, I had him put mufflers back in. But left 2 cats out. Seems to have a little more rumble but subtle. I actually dont mind it the way it is. But will eventuall probably just do it right and get Corsa's with Hi flow cats.

Hope this helps a little

It's funny you should ask, like Mike said we just tried it on his car last week. It sounds like crap. Acceleration sounded really hollow and decelleration sounded like firecrackers. Retaining the crossover did give it a hint of "GTS" like sound. With some decent mufflers I think it would have sounded good(pipes would still be small though)....we just put the stock mufflers back on.

Here are some pics.
