Chipping around cylinder sleeves

quick question??? I am doing some basic maintenance on 93. Once heads off..there is, what looks like some metal "'chipping" around the cylinder sleeves in the alum. block....any ideas on how this happens??/ is it an assembly consequence...? This is a 92 carry over car....also..black. Hand assembled engine??? Also, any idea how many 93's, 92 carry over to 93's, black 93's etc...thanks all, Sincerely, Mike

Any pics? I had my heads off my carry-over 93 last year to replace the head gaskets and piston rings (I was using a significant amount of oil) and dont recall seeing anything like you describe.

Also a friendly reminder to NOT turn the crankshaft with the heads off as you risk dislodging the cylinder sleeves. I made my own "dogbones" to hold the sleeves in place when I was replacing the rings.

Rocket62 thanks for the reply. no pics yet, I may get some taken before the heads are back on. Apparently the damage is done by not being so careful when pressing of pounding the sleeves back in place. Also, if you please, sounds like there is an aftermarket upgraded sandwiched head gasket with a metal layer for these gen 1 engines, as to prevent premature coolant leaking...from origanal gaskets. the price seems fairly elevated, any input on other options or should I expect to pay close to 500 for 2 gaskets...at this time i am going with stock..

one last one, I still have stock exhaust. when I can save some more bucks...I will upgrade...any strong recommendations on brand parts...thanks Mike

If you plan on keeping go with the upgraded gaskets. The original ones (if you can find them) will more that likely fail again. Do a search for the GEN1 the gaskets on this board. There were replacement gaskets being developed to beat the outrageous prices that DC charges for them.

You can't buy the old gaskets and even if you find them you'd be nuts to install them. The metal gaskets are OEM (there isn't an aftermarket). Chuck Tator gives the best discount 20% off no tax, no shipping and the kit includes about 10 gaskets you'll need.

Even as important on a gen1 is the thermostat crossover gaskets included in the oem kit. Make sure you use rtv sealant on gaskets and bolts. Common leaking point.
