A friend of mine tried to tell me the ZR-1 vettes were faster then the gen 1 Vipers. I need to prove him wrong - again.
Is there a site I can find old road test reports from Motor Trend I could show him? Any other ideas were to look?
Thanks

I do not have the Motor Trend article, but I have the Car and Driver March 1992.

Tested Viper 0-60 4.6 seconds / Quarter Mile 13.2 Seconds
Tested ZR-1 (1993) 0-60 4.9 seconds / Quarter Mile 13.4 seconds

Viper top speed 165 mph ZR1 top speed 171 mph

Viper Corners better, ZR1 brakes are better

I went to the track with my bud who has a 90 ZR-1 and I have the 96 R/T. Both cars have exhaust work, but he does not have headers(look in my sig. for all my mods). His best was a 13.1@109 and mine was 12.3@115. Hope this helps. Here is the thread I posted with pictures of me and my bud lining up for the race, http://vca2.viperclub.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB14&Number=254549&Forum=UBB14&Words=&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=6months&Main=254549&Search=true#Post254549

I have owned three ZR1's and two Vipers. My fastest ZR1, 1993, ran 12.8 at Desoto Raceway in about 65 degree weather with me driving. At the same strip, on a hotter day, I've run 12.4 in my 2000 Viper GTS. Both cars had mild exhaust mods only. That should answer the question.

It depends on the year ZR1 and the driver's skill.
Despite having less power, the earlier ZR1s were generally quicker than later models, with the best magazine times being with a 1990 ZR1 at 0-60 in 4.4 sec., and 1/4 mi. in [email protected].

http://corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/zr1/zr1perf.html

But they are not easy cars to launch in the 1/4 mile well, and the quicker car (ZR1 vs. Gen Viper) would most likely be dependent on driver's skill, as they are both very fast cars. But neither one was really designed for drag racing.

The later ZR1s had superior aerodynamics (like the GTS Viper) and could go 180MPH+.

My 94 ZR-1 ran a 12.60 @ 113 mph while my 99 Viper ran a 12.14 @119 mph. Both cars had essentially the same bolt-on mods including headers, high flow exhaust and enhanced intake airbox. The ZR-1 also had a DRM high performance chip which is not an option with the viper. Both cars ran on street tires at full pressure. Track conditions were about equal although at opposite ends of the spectrum.

As much as I love the ZR-1 for all its technology and high reving ability, the Viper's massive torque is tough to overcome.

0-40 mph 3.4 to 2.7
0-50 mph 4.2 to 3.6
0-60 mph 5.6 to 4.8
0-70 mph 7.0 to 5.8
0-80 mph 8.8 to 7.6
0-90 mph 10.8 to 9.2
0-100 mph 12.8 to 11.1

Time to distance
0-1320 ft (1/4 mi) 13.9 @ 105 to 13.1 @ 109

If you want a copy of the article, let me know and I'll fax or e-mail one to you when I get the chance.

Wow..the mile and hour on that particular test was way low on both those cars....I smell a guesstimate like they did with the first article on the GTS...

Remember guys, the original poster was comparing the Gen I Viper with the ZR-1.

And about the '92 M/T test, the guys obviously couldn't drive worth beans to get a 5.6 to 60, and 13.9@105 1/4 mile, unless they were at high altitudes.

Incedentally, those are similar numbers to the new Dodge SRT-4

"Motor Trend 1992 Tested ZR-1 (1993) 0-60 4.9 seconds / Quarter Mile 13.4 seconds"

That can't be right. I've got an automatic 96 regular Vette and it ran 13.8 @106 when it had 80k miles. The ZR1 must be faster than 13.4

And I know my gen1 R/T is faster than 13.2

They must have had an uphill track.

I thought everyone in CA was ;) The GTS makes the Z06 look like a plain Jane sitting next to it.

Hey guys, I never claimed the drivers at MT could actually DRIVE! I'm just quoting their stats as printed in the mag.

Please, don't shoot the messenger!
