What was the first year for the Gen 2 tubular headers. Can they be bolted directly into a Gen 1 and if not what is needed.

Gotcha coverd chuckO,
Jackster, they are nearly a direct fit. You'll need a die grinder to align a couple holes and such. For dyno day last year I made the change for a friend and he picked up solid 25HP.This is a very cheap mod,and the gen I's love it.

Save yourself a LOT of work, and cut out ALL the support runners between the flanges. I tried grinding here and there to clear the Gen 1 head bolts, and finally gave up and cut them all out, the used a grinder to round/smooth out the cuts.
They don't just bolt up.

I have 2002 stock "headers" on 36.000 mile 1993 RT/10. 410HP/476TQ, so they must be good for some gain.
Mine has all supports cut out. Other than that its a bolt on.

Can't speak to GENI HP improvement, but there is no HP gain on an early GENII's (1996 & 1997) cast iron manifolds versus the 1998+ tubular. Saves 20ish lbs. only. Change for a GENII is a waste of time IMO.

Anybody have a set of Gen2 headers they want to sell to put on my 92.5 Viper?

Keep your eyes peeled. You should be able to find some take-offs or a wrecked Viper and get the headers for shipping cost or slightly over shipping. Whatever you do, don't go paying $500 for them - unless you want to buy mine.

carguy,

the headers shown, are those gen 1 and gen 2, or gen 1 and a set of aftermarket headers?

You asked carguy, but they are GEN 2 (the rusty looking one), and aftermarket (chrome looking).
The braces that run between the flanges are what you cut out, and round/smooth out. I did mine, and had them high temp, ceramic coated.

Don't forget that the flex pipe portion also needs to be changed as the attachment method changes from axial clamps (Gen I) to the V-clamp for the later Gen II. They are not interchangeable.

As Cris said !!!
Also when you get them, you will see the RIGHT header, will have some "dents" in it, do not be alarmed, they are dented by the factory for frame rail clearance.

Well I found some 01 GTS headers :2tu: and they are on the way, now I need to find the flex pipe portion with the gen2 V-clamp configuration as above. Anyone have? Let me know!

Also, since I am upgrading the exhaust to 3" while I am at it, does anyone know what the maximum outside diameter for mufflers is that I can fit under my side sills? Stopped at the local performance muffler shop and was looking at the Magnaflow catalog but the only 3" mufflers they list are 6" in diameter...

As alway, any input would be appreciated!

Thanks Ruck! We have Gen 2 tubulars (also called MoPar Race Headers) that are under $150, including our tech support how-to; They will save weight and free up 15+ HP on 92-96 Gen 1.

Janni and Henry Cone were the 1st to document the use on 96-97 Gen 2, where they were a 'secret weapon' or an allowable but "unfair advantage" of sorts in Viper Days.... the weight savings and the torque bonus made Henry GLAD he swapped them, as allowed by VRL rules in class at that time....I dont know about now.

Dodge did NOT add these headers in a quest for HP.....it was purely for changing emissions requirements....the weight savings were a bonus, and any HP was 'unclaimed' by Dodge.

A certain retired Dodge engineer with a Roe s/c Gen1 mentioned to me last Summer that the Gen1 OE exhaust manifolds flow better than the Gen2 OEs.

"You think so?" I asked

"I know so!" he replied instantly..

:dunno:

Max muffler diameter is 6" round and you can still use the OEM heat insulators on a Gen 1.

As Chris said, the hardest part is coming up with the header to pipe connection, removing the bars between pipes is the easy part.

YOU WILL ALSO NEED the header bolts that go with the new headers. The tubular model flange is thinner and the bolts are shorter. The cast iron header bolts are too long.

Also, you can reuse the heat shield. It is just foil-cardboard-foil and can be reshaped easily.
