If it helps any,

92-93 short block assembly part # 5245-687
94 short block assembly part # 5245-750
95 short block assembly part # 5245-967
96 short block assembly part # 4848-015
97 short block assembly part # 4763-703
98 short block assembly part # 4763-703AB
99 short block assembly part # 4763-703AD
00 short block assembly part # 4763-703AD

So it appears that there have been some changes. And 2002 was the last of the genII.

The Gen 1 has removable wet cylinder liners (known as the "heavy-weight" engine). Gen 2 started in '96 and I believe were only installed in coupes and the roadsters still getting the heavy-weight until '97.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Gen 1 thermostat is in a housing with feet that look like small intake runners at the back of the block. It has steel tubes that run along the sides of the block that I didn't think Gen 2 had. Gen 2 thermostat housing attaches in the valley at the front of the block. Cannot be the same block. I think you've been hosed.
