Received a call from the DC dealer doing the recall 999 on my car.
He told me: recall is done. Recognized some "noise" during a test drive.
Checked the car and found a broken engine mount (right side)!
The mount must be welded.

Any thoughts about this issue?

It seems that with a broken motor mount, you would have noticed some
looseness in your drive train - like a clunk or something.
Ask them to give you the broken part if you're going to pay for a new one.

I noticed nothing! NO clunk. No problems with shifting. Nothing. Weird. I drove the car on two weekends more than 2000 miles before I brought the car for the recall to the dealer...

maybe ****** testdrive broke the engine mount? you know- banging gears, not matching rpms, sloppy shifting.. that kind of ugly stuff..

and yes, normally if you have a broken engine mount you will notice- it is fairly pronounced- especially if you are "in tune" and used to your car...

than again- who knows..

Hmmmmm. Could this be iatrogenic (dealer induced)? Worked great before and works like sheet after the dealer worked on the car? Hmmm? I'm not mechanically minded, but would a botched 999 recall repair possibly break an engine mount?

Do the dealers make any money on the recall work? No? HOW in the world could they make a profit when doing this work...

It' just of them catch 22 type things - Maybe they broke it, which could mean
it was cracked , or they drove it harder than you. But don't let them weld it,
get them to replace it with a new one.

The DC dealer removed the whole bracket (marked with red Xs) due to the recall and replaced it with the new (different) one...

If they have to weld something then it's not the mount itself. The engine mount is a serviceable part. The part of the frame where the rt. engine mount stud goes through is probably where the break is. I've seen these areas crack before.dj

Thanks David. The dealer told me it has to be welded. I haven´t seen the break so far. I guess it must be frame related...not good at all.

>>>I've seen these areas crack before.dj<<<

How many? Is this another future RECALL

Hi ViperGTS,

just noticed your address in Switzerland... I have been wondering what to do about these recalls: which dealer do you have your car worked on?

So said David Jenkins

BINGO! The motor mount is aluminum...and very obvious. Your dealer is not welding on your motor mount specifically. Pictured is the driver's side motor mount, the passenger side mount is identical.

No picture of the recall work so far. The dealer is a 2 hour drive away (one way) and I had not time to visit.
I will post pictures as soon as possible.

You need to investigate this issue further. The engine mount is replaceable p.n 4643530 list 36.75 r/side......4642617...41.75 l/side......the mount bracket (aluminum) also replaceable........what they are probably talking about is the part of the frame that connects the upper and lower frame rail and supports your motor........Make sure you find out wether it broke at the weld or the metal itself and above all make absolutely sure that it is not just rewelded over the broken weld as it must be ground down completely and rewelded PROPERLY.

After recall work done

The "broken" engine mount is in fact a tear in a welding about 1/2 inch long. You can hear a scratching noise during driving a slalom (engine OFF!) from the passenger side of the car. Like metal on metal rubbing.

UPDATE:
The DC dealer and a DC representative made a report and pictures and have sent the documents to Dodge, US. We have to wait until we receive an answer, instructions how to repair etc....

I am waiting - waiting - waiting ... 4 months now!

Hi Folks,

Can Chuck "Viper Wizard" get involved with this, he has helped us Europeans before. I believe that he has contacted the Chrysler European Customer Support in Brussels and moved things along for another owner with a problem.

The fault sounds "funny", I have not heard of any other owner having this problem when the recall work was carried out.

WELDED. Painted. Seems to be ok.

Dealer told me that he has done about 50 recalls on Vipers so far. 4 cars have/had a tear (frame side) in one of the engine mount weldings.
