I am sure this has ben disscused plenty of times before. I have a 1994 (stock) and was looking to try to make it sound better. I have read that some owners have removed thier muffler and installed a straight tube in its place. Dose that work? I am looking to keep my factory exhuast manifolds so any bolt on system maybe a option.

Thanks Curt

Explaining Viper things to you
Anything you remove, whether the muffler or the cat, will increase how loud the car is. So if loud is an improvement to you, as many define sounding good by sounding loud, then running straight pipes down the side will help.

Alternatively, as you might exceed acceptable noise levels (you might like it for a bit...) by running straight pipes, you might want to investigate one of the systems that has high flow cats and mufflers for the Gen 1 cars.

Roe Racing has a kit like that.

3" Roe Racing High Flow Side Exhaust System - 92-95 Viper - Exhaust Systems - Roe Racing

I've got side exhaust on my '01 GTS with high flow cats and mufflers, and the sound is great. Good enough for date night, but will peel paint at WOT.

ViperJames (who has been MIA for a long time here...) had that Roe 3" side exhaust on his GenI and it was loud but sounded incredible. It's very loud, its aggressive and it sounds like armageddon is coming...and that's with the cats and muffler.

I have just installed the 3" Roe catless sidepipes on my 94 because just like you I was not happy with the stock system and what a difference they make. I still have to change the stock headers for tubular's but at the moment I am more than pleased with the result and maybe wont bother. Because the Roe system is so well made it is only involves a couple of hours work. It took me longer to get rid of the rear exiting system than it did to fit the new pipes.

I suggest you find a car that has a candidate system and listen from the inside.

I bought my '94 with a Hennessey 3" system on it and the cockpit was loud (OK) but the drone/buzziness was painful. Replacing the straight-through muffler with a 3" SpiralFlow muffler made it a little louder (still OK) but the buzz was painful. It was the only time I drove with earplugs.

I replaced the entire thing with a Gen 2 system. Should have done rear exhaust a long time ago.

Certainly opinions vary and everyone deserves their own sense of what sounds best and what is really loud. I am specifically pointing to the cockpit buzz (some have called it drone) because it is so annoying.
