I tried it from underneath the car, but that didn't seem to be the way to go. So I went inside and did it from there. I had to cut the 'toes' off the 19mm crow's foot for it to slide over the two-sided nut, but then it popped right off. Didn't seem to be much torque on it. I can almost smell the rubber burn :) first gear, it's alright....

I have never paid much attention to these and I have seen a few pics, so does it really improve the throw over a lowered MGW knob for $60 bucks?

I haven't driven it yet, and I haven't tried a MGW knob. Some say with the rubber damper removed there's a better 'feel' to it; which you'd still have with only a MGW.

I don't see where the rubber has a lot of 'give' on the workbench, but there must be something to the claims.

:)

I built my own short-shift rod, welded two bolts together and canned the rubber insulator!!!!!! Makes the shift throw much shorter!!!! Didn't do the MGW knob tho,,,, PISTOL_GRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I just got a short shift shaft but I'm having problems getting the old shaft off. I used a crow's foot and had no problem getting it around the nut but I couldn't get it to budge at all. It just wouldn't move no matter what I tried. Any suggestions on things I could try?

Man, I don't know what to tell ya... I used a 3/8 extension in the crow's foot and it came loose like it only had about 20 ft/lbs of torque on it.

Try some penetrating oil I guess. Are you sure you're on the bottom nut right at the trans lever?

Yeah, it's right on the trans lever. It's not reverse threaded or anything weird like that is it? I'm going to take a break from it for now. I'll go get some penetrating oil later and give it another go.

No, it's not reverse threaded. I'll show you this picture to decide if you want to go this far with it.

I thought I'd be smart and just double nut the upper shaft (far left), then twist the whole thing out from there... Well it gave way, except all I did was rip the rubber damper off of the stud!

Anyway that made it a little easier to get at the bottom nut in question. Good thing-the only thing holding the shifter on after made that mistake would be gravity and a little rubber to rubber friction...

Matt if all else fails remove the shifter from the transmission. Do a search on installing the B&M Ripper Shifter for the details. It will take about an hour to remove and reinstall. Rick

What have I done? I still can't get the shift shaft off and was going to move the car so I could get to the passenger side door easier but the it won't start now. I turn the key and all I get is a clicking sound. What did I do?

I don't think so, all the lights and things come on no problems. And they stay on when I turn the key and get the loud clicking sound.

Ok, dead battery was the problem. I jump started it no problems. No I just back to my original problem of getting the shifter shaft off. :(

Woo hoo!!! I got the old shaft off! Used a second wrench to extend the handle of the first one, not something I like to do, to many possibilities of something going wrong but it worked this time. The old shaft looks like there was a little bit of rust on the threads, I guess that's why it was such a pain to get off.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions offered here. This board is full of a good bunch of people.
