Well had it 3 weeks now.

Let me just say VA is ... ***.

I got a front license plate nonsense ticket. I talked him down to a warning pretty easy beacuse I just got the car BUT... heres the problem

This little bastard sits right outside my house, about 1-2 times a week... Stands in the middle of the road with cones.. and just pulls people over for either front license plates or inspection stickers or tax stickers.

So im basically screwed unless i want to pay 85$ every week. I HATE.. let me say that again... HATE front license plates, especially on a viper it makes it look like garbage... but i guess nothing i can do? Who sells brackets for them? i dont want to drill or do anything to the front of the car.

Or... well actually this will open up a huge can of worms and it's been quite some time since i've explained this but i'll do my best. Origionally you needed a STATE licence plate only to show that they owned the vehical until you paid off the sales bill from the dealership. IF you could pay off the whole thing at once with gold or silver, you could apply to get an "origional sales of ownership" bill and THAT allowed you not have to put plates on the car. Because YOU personally owned it. Remember " green paper" is not REAL money it's just a Debt note in the place of gold or silver. Paper money from the 40's and below will have printing on them mentioning that specifically. I'll post more when I dig back into this topic again.. thanks for the reminder

I seem to recall someone that took this to court and won on the argument that this was a specialty vehicle that did not come with a front plate holder? I've been pulled over a few times for no front plate and have always explained the above. It has always worked for me. Lots of warnings and no tickets.

If Va is like NY, the law says that if the state hands out front and rear plates, they must be on the vehicle. They must be forward facing, permanently attached.

So, consider this (courtesy of someone on the board):

Get the double sticky tape that holds moulding or emblems onto the outside of a car. Attach the plate to the inside of the windshield. Likely it'll be low enough to the ground to qualify for the height specifications. When the officer points and laughs, you remind him it's permanent, just like the "Police Interceptor" emblem on his trunk lid and the fake chrome around the wheels.

Or one step further; I've thought about making a form to bend the plate to the counter of the fascia (lower lip?) Then use the double sticky to put the plate on. Maybe it can double as a chin protector. At least it won't look like it's in the way.

What's with the Fairfax County police? We were there last week visitng my daughter who lives in Fairfax, just behind Woodson HS and they were all over the area. I came back from a grocery run and there were three of them on a side street (25 MPH) with four cars pulled over. On Little River Turnpike I kept seeing them nailing people in the 25 and 35 MPH sections.

Is Fairfax County facing a funding shortfall?

Are you sure it is legal for him to stand outside and stop all traffic like that? Of course in VA you may be screwed, that is one state I don't even like to visit. Might be worth a 1/2 hour of a lawyers time to find out what is legal and not legal in your area.

Cops like that deserve the total lack of respect they get.

How about the old trick: The Dodge dealership parts order form stating that the front tag bracket has been ordered but is on back order. That should work for a while.....remember, parts are getting hard to find since they don't make'm anymore ;)

1) The manufacturer did not release the car with any way for a front license plate to attach.

2) A front license plate could interfer with airflow and heat up your specialty car causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

3) Any aftermarket license plate options are unstable and have been known to fall off during regular driving and could damage both your car as well as cause accidents.

4) Drilling holes and mounting the license plate could caused damage to the resale value.

These are some arguments you can make to a judge.

Do this: buy the suction cup license plate holder. Attached the license plate to the holder. Drive down the highway and repeatedly throw the assembled holder with plate out the car to get it nice and scratched. Finally, get somebody to run over the assembled holder with plate a few times and really bend it up. Now, keep the assembly under your passenger seat. Anytime you are stopped show this to the cop, say it had recently came off while driving normally and caused damage to your cars and other cars. If that one cop gives you grief go before a judge and show him the damaged goods and argue the above points. If they don't care tell them you will buy another license plate holder as long as they can give you a waiver to any damage it may cause to your car as well as the safety of others on the highway when it comes off again. That may get some attention.

Wow, i like the way you think.

also someone above posted about saying the dealership has the brackets on back order.

I was thinking of maybe photoshopping a fake letter from a random dodge dealership , specifically stating ................

"1) The manufacturer did not release the car with any way for a front license plate to attach.

2) A front license plate could interfer with airflow and heat up your specialty car causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

We don't have front license plate laws here in GA but if they ever come about or if I move somewhere that does require them, THIS is what I'm going to do. Pure genius.

I never did understand why some states require front plates. It would seem to me that it would be less costly in materials for the state to require rear plates only. Anyone understand the reasoning being the front plate?

I'm not exactly for sure but I believe it is for some old tollways that had front photos of the cars or something along those lines.

Sorry guys. The above reasons do not work in FX county/city!!! I made a visit to the police HQ – right behind my house. They are very rude about this issue. I mean seriously rude. I was given a hint that they can arrest me for talking to them. Wow…. Interesting point – another officer who stayed away was shocked by watching his boss behavior. I showed him that I am shocked toooo…

Their answer is – law is law – go to the Dodge dealer and they will install one for you. The dealers were apparently instructed by a state commission/whatever about the only solution = drill holes and mount a bracket. The worst, they can revoke your registration and request a police supervised inspection – a procedure you have to go through when building a kit car, etc. So, I designed my own bracket, drilled four holes from the bottom and installed the plate in a way to mitigate potential overhearing problems. I really hate to be interrupted when on the road and talk to them. Many times, they looked at my plate disappointed – no reason to stop me.

BTW, be very careful when driving on Braddock – within 5 mile of their HQ. They constantly train new officers in using radars and issuing tickets. The area is really crowded because training and practicing, I guess.

ok, so lets say that you are NOT going to be an abiding citizen and will just move to a new location. Which state does not have the dual front & rear plate law?

Been there...done this.

$49 and you pop it on when you leave and return home. I do the same when I cross the 59th Street Bridge here in NYC where they have a whole police squadron to check license and registrations entering Manhattan!

Soon as I get over the bridge, the plate comes off for the rest of the drive.

All the "no plate explanations" only work if the cop's in a good mood...or a member of your family.
