Re: Folks who have gone 11\'s or so stock ...

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for my "How to Drag Race Your Viper" Video.

Anyways here are a few pointers,

I rarely disagree with Jon B. but with regards to fuel level i do, have it as full as you can. Weight rearward will not hurt you and you may develope fuel starvation with low quantities as the fuel runs back and up the rear of the tank during acceleration while the fuel sump is in the front of the tank!

Remove your air filters while at the track.

In my video I describe how to properly set tire pressure for maximum contact patch.....too lenghthy for typing now.

Launch with a slipping clutch at @ 2500 rpms. Shift at 5500 or SOONER to stay in the torque band and SHIFT INTO 4TH GEAR.

You will need a SNELL 85(or higher) certified helmet(dot helmets are not legal at NHRA facilities)

Do NOT allow your rear tires to "HOP" as this will break a u-joint....any u-joint if hard and long enough in duration. Slipping the clutch lightly and "granny shifting" the 1-2 will eliminate this potential problem.

Good luck.....your stock viper should run 12.20's and under with a decent track and temps around 75 or lower(assuming near sea level)

Thanks for the input folks, I'm saving this info. The wife put a stopper on the track trip just as I was grabbing the helmet - obligations with the kid I didn't know about, oh, well, priorities. It's probably just as well, it's 94 & humid as can be.

Tom, I got your video a few days ago & it's pretty good, I was just fishing for tricks & tips from anyone & everyone that's cranked out hi 11 to lo 12's connsistantly, polling all who are fast, Steve for instance, that's all. JonB is a God & I'd try anything he said, but I may agree with you on the fuel - I know on my mustangs with street tires I ran much better with a near full tank & would slip (literally) up into the hi 12's on a 1/4 tank. Thanks again.

Yeah, 12.20s sounds pretty good for the average 99 viper.

I know Tom meant 12.20's, that's on his tape too & is the common time to shoot for, for most of us mortals. The more God like are in the high 11's.

MustangMatt,

There are a few in driving distance from Balto. I'm to the west in Ellicott City so I go to 75-80 Dragway, it's a straight shot down 70 west to rout 75, it's at the intersection of routes 75 & 80 hence the name, about 30 mins from me (url: www.7580dragway.com). There's also Capitol Raceway where I ran regularly with my supercharged stangs from 87-about 95, it's off route 3, 45 mins from me (url: www.capitolraceway.com). There's also Cecil County Raceway, a nice track North of Balto, I last ran there last year in my '99 Cobra Convertible in the Modular Shootout, it's about 45 mins North of Balto on 95. As you can tell I'm also a long time stang ****** - 4 stangs, 3 supercharged, mid to low 12's on street tires, I use to pray to find cars like Vipers to beat, now I drive one. If you want, shoot me an email sometime & we can let each other know if we go up - I'm just waiting for the next gen Cobra to come out for my daily driver, once a stanger ...

Or low 12's.

I'm thinking I might try to hit the drag strip tonight for the run what ya brung session just to see what I can do. I have 2600 miles & completely bone stock & I'm looking for advice on making my runs. I've been running supercharged mustangs in the mid 12's on street tires for about 6 years now, so I'm familiar with the track etc. I'm looking for driving tips & tricks from folks who have managed great times with stock Vipers. I'm not looking to do anything great my first time running the car, I'm just trying to avoid "looking too bad" when representing the viper community. No matter what I'll have fun just running full throttle though.

Thanks,

Dave.
