gas cap removal

My gas cap has some corrosion and I need to remove it for polishing. If I remove the screws holding the cap, will the nuts on back stay in place, or will they fall off?

yep... and some vasoline on the rubber part the metal slips into. You'll finally get it, but a few curse words will be in order.
