Hi folks,

I've got a bone stock Gen I and want to start performance modifications soon.
I'm thinking about NOS/propane for the real HP gains.

One thing I need some advice on though is how to get a good exhaust tone.
I was really impressed with the sound of Cody's Belanger on his final edition Gen II.
Does anybody know how to get this deep rumbling sound on the Gen I ? Most probably the side exhausts each fed by a battery of 5 cylinders make this a very challenging exercise.
Any input welcome !

I have stock cats with belanger 3" mufflers. It sound's just right I think.
Those mufflers seem to be straight through. It might sound about the same with no mufflers behind the stock cats.

I originally had the Borla mufflers and Borla high flow cats. Car dynoed at 378 RWHP & 450 RWTQ. Had a local muffler shop weld in 3" straight pipes eliminating the cats and re dynoed. The results were 392 RWHP and 463 RWTQ.
I have also read a post on here before that some one dynoed their Gen I car with 5 or six differant set ups and the Borla's with no Cats made the most power.

As for the sound, it was a little loud at first, in fact I told myself if I did not pick up at least 10 RWHP I was going to put the high flow cats back on. But I have gotten used to the car being louder and really really like the sound now. It did sound good with the Borla mufflers and Cats, now with out the cats it just sounds down right mean!

Also good choice in a power adder with the N2O system. Definitely best bang for the buck and loads of fun.

I have had the Nitrous Express kit in my car for about a year now and have probably run 12 or so 15 pound bottles. Very good system and I don't have to hassle with filling propane bottles and keeping the bottle pressure up on another bottle. Not saying one is better than the other, I guess it is what ever system you personally like and feel comfortable with. Seems to me that they both get the job done very well.

Couldn't find it using the search function...dang.

Thanks for all the great advice !

Just changing the mufflers is a very inexpensive way to get some horsepower and sound. Obviously not everyone likes the same exhaust note, but when I changed from stock mufflers to glasspacks, I was extremely pleased. With the glasspacks, stock cats and K&N + smoothies, I was at 371/429. Changed from that to HenSE cats, borla mufflers, Valaya headers, and T&D 1.7's. It is pretty loud (maybe I'm getting old?) but it sounds great when you get on it. Also improved HP/TQ by about 46/23.

Don't forget that dynomax makes a great sounding muffler for about $55 a side in 3in. inside diameter. These are the straight through design and sound an awful lot like the old chambered mussle car exhaust of the late 60's early 70's. They have them in summit listed as dynomax Race bullits. Also you may want to look into fabricating a crossover pipe if at all possible on a gen one as that helps with the exhaust note. Drew

PartsRack asked Belanger to make us a Gen-1 cat back. We have offered this for $595 for a couple years now, and it is on our website. A couple Oregon VCA members have it. Ask for VCA discount off this price.

We also have our own "twin-12" Gen1 system, as can be heard on Oregon VCA VP Dean Hansen's 94 RT. Installed TODAY, he lives near you. We INSTALLED this sytem here in Washougal for under $450.............3". Deep, muscley rumble. Nice burble, not backfire. WOT roar, never ratty. Nice chrome tips. Cooler sills; immediate throttle response, probably +20-25 HP. He'll be at the drags at PIR tomorrow.

I had the Belanger exhaust for my Gen I that I bought from Jon with high flow cats. The car was very loud but sounded sweet.

Jon,

Thanks for the update. I just talked to Dean and will try to hook up with him so I can hear how it sounds like.
I might be interested, provided it's not TOO loud.
