I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to this question in prior posts, so I'm sorry if this has been done before. I am considering adding an NOS system with a 225 shot to an almost stock '98 RT. Most of the time I will be using radials, but I do sometimes run slicks. Has anyone busted a stock half-shaft under a load like this? I know that it would be best to upgrade first, but I'm just wondering how necessary it is. Thanks in advance!

I run DRs all the time and haven't had any problems.

I did break a half shaft about a year ago tho...but it was because of wheel hop...the drag radials fixed that.

I have not had Halfshaft Problems with HD Upgrade , but I also added HALF SHAFT HOOPS because when they break they can do a lot of damage.

I also added a DRIVESHAFT HOOP , because fuel lines run down upper drivers side of tunnel. I have heard of a few fires due to u-joint breakage.

At your level of modifications , I do not think HD Halfshafts are necessary.

Whey take a chance?

You could probably break one with a stock motor if you don't launch right, and have drag radials.

You ****** second gear at 50mph, tires hook, break you half shalft. Now your stuck at the drag strip, or sitting on the side of the road, and you have beat the he** out of your car with a broken half shaft from 50mph down to 0.
If you run Michelins they will break loose, and no problems. Run drag raials and buy half shalfts, and why not loops.

I've seen quite a few Unitrax 800 HP halfshafts break at the starting line. I've won quite a few drag races that way, too.

I've never broken my stock halfshafts, but I upgraded to the Unitrax titanium halfshafts just because...

Another thought - half shafts can go bad without completely breaking. The splines will twist. This allows the half shaft to drive the car, but, the suspension has limited travel in the vertical direction. I just replaced a set that was close to impossible to remove because they wouldn't compress. I just found them while replacing the rear-end. This time I painted a white line on the two parts of the assembly, this way you can verify if they begin to restrict the suspension.
