Headers cooked hole in my HVAC air box . . .

Picked the car up from Belangers today (system is still too loud for my taste but beautiful) and Lou pointed out a few problems on the car beside the 998 Recall being installed backwards. Big one is that the previous headers burnt a hole in the HVAC air box (the one that has the round hole on top that mates up to the passenger-side "speaker grill" on the hood). Is this a popular problem? I'm going to check how much a whole new box is tomorrow, but maybe I will try gluing some heat shielding on as a patch instead if I have to worry about it happening again (Lou swears their headers don't do it since the aluminized put off lots less heat than stainless). What do you think? New box or patch? Or new box with heat shield?

It has happened a few times in the past, but I wouldn't say that it was a wide spread problem. I think you should get a new box and heat shield it for protection.

Yes. We have a tech here in Phoenix that was trained at the factory and has done many of the 998 recalls - including many repairs of work done improperly by other dealers. Hope to visit him this weekend. Just a heads up, it was Big O Dodge in Greenville, SC that did mine incorrectly. Good news is they did a real nice job installing the plates, just backwards.

Phoenix same happened to me I just bought a replacement box from Jon-B and put the heat sheild back on that side. if you just try to repair it you will still get the smell from the engine area when you cut on your air or blower.

SVSi made a while back, a metal heat shield, for just this purpose. In addition to shielding the box from melting, it made the air conditioning work much better, as it did not need to deal with the extra heat from the headers.
