My car is at the dealer and they told me I need new brake pads (fine), but they also say that everytime I replace the pads they need to turn the rotors to "deglaze" them (or something like that) which of course they are charging me an arm and a leg for. Do I need this? Please help!

mjguflaw,
How many miles do you have on the Viper?
If the rotors are that bad? Do not re-face them, replace them.

Parts list: [IF needed?]
"Mopar Parts" [DC]

Front pads #4897218AB MSRP $210.00
Rear Pads #4897219 MSRP $174.00
Front rotors #4642122 MSRP $126.00 each
Rear rotors #4642353 MSRP $103.00 each
Labor: NO MORE THEN 2 HOURS!

Kept your Dealer in check!

The car has 22,000 miles and the rotors are not warped at all. They said this needs to be done for the new pads to work correctly?????

They are right: "That they wont work correctly without re-facing!"

If you where in my shop, I would recommend replacing them!

Labor: 1 hour for the front & 1 hour for the rear.

Your more then welcome to call me and we can talk about your brakes!

I agree with viper wizard that they should be surfaced, but I replaced mine using a bendix part number for the fronts and the rears without surfacing with no side effects. I also own a shop and would always convince a customer to surface (we always do). But if there is no pulsation, save the rotor material, and just slip in new pads. Worked for me!

Mike, JonB will do a much better job describing the situations in which the EBC greens will be right for you...It will depend on how you intend to use the car (how much track time, your skill level, etc...)

For normal (Viper normal) street use, I put on the EBC greens for less squeak and reduced dust...I have white wheels on my sweeeeeeeeeeeet 96 RT/10, and the dust on those white wheels just doesn't look right...Your brake dust accumulation on your rims may be less noticable...

PS Once again, thanks to the Viper Wizard...i don't like to condemn someone I have never dealt with, but was their $50 "error" on MSRP an error, or something else....

Mike- I replaced my pads this summer. Asked the Viper tech to inspect the rotors. He said they were fine. Resurfaced them and off I went. @ 30,000 miles/stayed with Mopar parts for stopping power.

Pads on the way to your dealer for Monday delivery. THANKS.

At 22000 mi I suggest resurfacing the fronts. Actually, its a $20 walk-in job to resurface 1 rotor at most brake shops, but a dealer charges $85/hr, and a robotic machine does the 20 minutes of work!

Chuck is FAST at 2-hrs for the whole car, which is why NE owners are lucky to have him.....

After speaking with Jon B. I decided to go with the EBC Greens, and Jon was nice enough to make sure they got out via FedEx today. For some reason though Jon I didn't get the email invoice (perhaps our anti-SPAM filter at work blocked it), so I'm glad you posted here. In any event, thanks to everyone for the great info and thanks Jon for handling this so quickly. This board rules!

I am constantly amazed how you respond so quickly to a fellow viper owner with a question...seems like you must keep your computer logged onto this site 24/7.

Thanks Chuck.

Thanks all. They're telling me 2.3 hours per axle @ $85 per hour. They had overpriced the front pads by about $50 (and I can tell you it gave me no small sense of satisfaction number to read him the part # and MSRP to him). Thanks Viper Wizard! I also have a call into Jon B. on the EBC Greens. So are those definitely the way to go?
