All,

I need you help and feedback.
I purchased a 2000 RT/10 in March of 2005 and the dealership painted the hood prior to my purchase to remove "scratches". (I never saw the car prior to purchase).

Now I am having issues with the "paint peeling" around the NACA duct, and paint "blisters" where the "patch-work" was done.
Please provide feedback on what you think I should do.

Should I demand a new hood?
Or just get another paintjob?

What are the chances that the "scratches re-paint job" was concealing cracks in the hood?

Check out the pictures.

Sorry everyone ..I did not know they came out this big.
And I don't know how to resize the pictures without losing resolution.
(But I warned the 56K crowd)

Wooo viperman, last time I saw pictures like those I was on some heavy acid but that was a long time ago (at least a month or two ago). Obviously downsizing the photos will probably give us a better idea of what is going on but it sure seems like the dealer is covering something up. Can't believe the problem is in the hood, just seems like a bad paint job that should be simple to fix by someone that knows how to paint and also at the dealers expense.

The pictures are big - but good.
****** paint job, probably looked bad right after it was done - and got
worse with time. Possible causes - Too heavy coats - with not enough drying time in between or any of the numerous things that affect paint drying/curing time.

I really doubt the paint is hiding cracks in the fiberglass, because
that paint couldn't contain a crack if it's as dry and inflexable as I imagine.

None of you guys think that may have been a hood repair that they didn't let 'set up' before painting? I'd have to agree with the naca duct comment though -- they installed it before the paint was dry.

I would agree. Having repaired a few hoods myself, I would believe there was some "reglassing" of this hood along with the repaint. Keep in mind the bottom could be ok even if the top of the hood was damaged or cracked. In some of those pictures it really looks like fiberglass matt is showing through not the original hood MDF material. I have repaired and painted a hood that looked "perfect" only to have Blisters and bubbles appear in few weeks from the heat. In that case you have to grind down and start over again. The culprit were air-bubbles trapped in the fiberglass. The fix. Use a stiff paint brush to "pat down" the fiberglass matting and release the tiny bubbles that can remain......

You could always get the body shop to sand back the paint then call you so you can see what is going on behind whats there..
All the best

You people are the best. Dan Cragin recommended a shop here in Los angeles. I am taking it there next week for an estimate.

** How much would it cost to repair the hood? ***

Removal of the hood, and ducts.
Sanding, painting, and clear coat.
Reinstallation of the hood.
Done professionally.

Any ideas on total cost ???

How about some picks of the front end where we can see gaps and such. Since the paint job is so bad I am betting that if there is other damage the repairs were equaly as bad and would show in the gaps.

Unfortunatly, I am betting that this car was in a front end collision and that hood is probably a used one they repainted to match the car.

Russ,

Actually good call.

I checkedwith a body shop in West Los Angeles which DC Performance recommended.
They said the car was most likely in an accident.

I am waiting to hear back from my attorney as to how to proceed.
