Yep. I remember Bob Lutz when he was talking about the early version of the V-10. He said "Americans love to talk about horsepower, but they buy torque!".

The quote I remember is "Americans buy horsepower, but drive torque", which is pretty much true for any driving situation (e.g. street) where you're not near redline.
To be fair to the 'Vette guys, a 488 CI V8 would make about the same TQ as our V10. It would not, however, look half as cool
