The original HRE's have a stepped down lip; sort of a two-stage deal that looks kind of like a lip within a lip. The R series has a wide flat lip that goes straight to the spokes. This is the much more popular look these days, and the R's look significantly larger than the regular series in the same wheel size because the stepped down lip causes the spoked portion on the originals to be smaller than the actual wheel diameter.

Mark, What this stepped lip really means is the regular series has a smaller inside rim. For instance, the 18" series has a 17" center, the stepped rim makes up the 1" difference.

The R series is a 18" center and a near flat lip. Visually looks 100% larger and deeper.
