Here's the procedure from "the MAN" himself, Mr Herb Helbig, Team Viper Manager of Vehicle synthesis:

"Keep your vehicle speed below 70 MPH (113 KPH) for the first 1000 miles (1600 km). Do NOT make any full-throttle starts or acceleration during this time. Avoid driving at a constant engine rpm for long periods.

Here is a suggested schedule for best engine break-in:

Light throttle run-ups, shifting at a maximum rpm of 2500 for the first 200 miles (never exceeding the speed limit)

Recommend change the oil at 200 mile mark

Light throttle run-ups, max of 3500 for the next 200 miles

Light throttle run-ups, max of 4000 for the next 200 miles

Light throttle run-ups, max of 4500 for the next 200 miles

Light throttle run-ups, max of 5000 for the next 200 miles"

The car does come with synthetic, but it is VERY important to get that "old" oil out quickly ....

I believe at the 200-400 mile mark would probably work?

Where are you picking it up?

Dont be afraid to beat the heack out of it either. I did a 20 foot burn out out of the dealer. As for the oil change? Shouldnt be a problem. Remember these are practically truck engines.

It will be a blast. I drove mine to Chi-Town a week after I got mine. If it is warm and you dont want to turn on the air heres a tip. The car gets reeeeeally hot. (I think you are getting a GTS if I can remember). Roll down the windows, rest your elbow on the top of the door where you usually would and put your hand half way up the pillar. It creates a perfect wind deflector so you get a nice breeze. The car really doesnt get much air in it with the windows down. Thats why I do this.

I have beat the heck out of mine since day 1. I did an oil change at 2800 miles. No problems yet. I respect the fact that you need to take care of these engines, as I do, but its a pushrod V-10 with high tolerance deviations. We'll see.

Hey , maybe this should be a good comparo.

Beating the heck out of your viper Vs. taking care of it. We'll see the different problems that arise then do a whole breakdown.

I was thinking, if I didn't change the oil soon enough, that would be the perfect excuse for me to redo the entire engine at LPE a year or two down the road, right?

Now you're talkin'!!!! Yeah I guess you need a targa and the C5 is an excellent car. Id still have mine if everyone in my area didnt have one. I guess you DO need the C5 for that targa experience, heads up display, power seats. Even though some people dog the C5 on this page it is 100% THE best sports car for the money. And its not THAT much slower than the viper.

Anyway theres no such thing as too many cars.

Improper oil changes usually don't show up until 40 to 50 thousand miles.

Ive never put more than 10,000 miles on a car. So thats not an issue. If I put 40,000 miles on mine before I can get my hands on a 2003 then I guess I will have to live with it.

If I were you I'd just find a Mobil station at my first lay over (buy the filter at the dealer when you pick up). It'll take a 1/2 hour but give you peace of mind, remember you have all those little, tiny metal particals floating around in your motor from break in.

1000 miles?? I thought it was 500 according to the manual. Believe me, as soon as I clicked over 500 miles I did a holeshot at the next intersection. Of course a few happened before that; maybe even as early as 20 miles.

The great thing about your break-in, is you'll still have half your trip home when your at the 1000 mile mark!!! ....so grab some nice relaxing jazz CD's for the first half of your journey .... and grab your hot mix for mile 1001!!!!

It's just a SlowC5.

Boost is a very different experience and I like how no body really notice how special it really is.

I can putt around in a parking lot like a stock C5 and most people wouldn't know it's not that slow.

It's definitely a keeper. If things go well, I might even see a 427 TT C5 in the future...

Hmm... I might be able to go easy for the first 500 miles. Once I am in Montana, I will have to be a Saint to be able to go easy!

When it gets back, photos will be done for sure. I think I will really like the color in real life. I have only seen one in person, but it doesn't have any stripes.

Anyone has super-duper ear plugs that I can borrow during my "lecture" at Woodhouse?

Seriously, how do you guys hold back and not do a 1st-2nd 100ft long burn out? Is there some kind of medicine that I can use?

I remember the first few cars, I was able to follow the break-in procedures. But then, the break-in period gets shorter and shorter in my mind. I think the latest was, "Oh, it is fully warmed up. It's broken in."
