JTEC is an acronym for Jeep / Truck Engine Controller...

The viper computer from roughly 1996 to 2006 was very similar to the unit used to run many of the engines at Chrysler in that time period. It did however undergo several iterations during that decade, so some look outwardly different than others. Earlier ones were painted black as they could be seen from outside the car on some of the SRs as seen from particular angles.

Obviously the calibrations and certain pinouts are specific to the viper application.

It is an engine controller, which roughly handles spark / fuel / emissions for the car, it also transmits the engine data out to other modules like the dash to drive the guages, etc.
