After doing some research and speaking with Jon B and Lou Belanger, I decided to go with the Belanger long tube's with the high flow's and cat back system (no cross-over). WHile I was at it, I had to put some more grear in the rear. I hated trying to drive slowly through parking lots and have the car start to buck cause first gear is so damned tall. I ordered all the goodies from Jon B im the end of September and made my appointment for the install with Tator for November, his first opening!! I was surpries to get the part in in less then a week! After waiting a few days, I decided to have a a local race shope (Jannetty Racing) install the gears at least, that way I caould feel each mod seperately. The owner installed my dynatech headers and borla catback on my Magnum back in 04 and also did some minor work on my Ram SRT-10 and is know for his work on Mustangs and diesel trucks. I've seen a few Vipers in his shop and he is a great guy with gears.

WHen I brough Jannetty the gears, he quickly got to work. All was good until I got a call from the owner, Ted. He said the ring gear was just slopping onto the Hydra Lock. I made a few calls and the general concusus from Unitrax and Jon B was that this was not an issue and probably caused form the gears being polished (also cryo'ed). Never the less, Ted said he would not install them and guarentee them. I was pissed at first and didn't understand why he wouldn't install them. After I got outta work, I drove down to his shop to check it out myself. Ted was right, the ring gear simply fell into place on the hydrolock with a few thousandth's of an inch worth of slack. I explained this to Unitrax who was to happy to swap the gears out. They called all around and overnighted a set from a shop that had some in stock in LA. Jon B took care of the rest which was sweet (he paid for the new set and I was supposed to sent the old ones right back, I had to leave town on business and I took to long, oops, sorry Jon).

Something happend when the car was on the lift, I saw a few scratched under the fornt bumper. Worst yet, I could see the common rocker panel rash up close and personal and this made me sick! I had the front bumper removed along with the rocker panels to get touched up! While the car was apart, I developed a bad tooth infection and had to get my wisdom teeth pulled on the day I was scheduled to bring the car to Tators. I had to cancel my Tator appointment. I couldn't stare at my beautiful headers for one more minute. I had to get them installed. The rockers were already removed so I gave Jannetty a call and told them I had a project. The guys at Jannetty had the exhaust installed before my rovckers and bumper were done at paint. I had to wait antoher week for those to get finished. In the mean time I got a chance to hear the car, what a sound. This past friday I called Jannetty and they jsut took delivery of the rockers and bumper. IT was too late to install them so I was going to have to wait till monday : (
To my surprise, I got a call from Ted today while at the gym, he decided to button the car up this morning, she was ready!!

I drove down to the shope and picked up my Viper. I have to say, the belanger system soujnds mean. I went with the crosover delete, so the system is loud. I think its perfect. My initail observations of the exhaust. Cant tell much by SOP yet, the roads were a bit wet so I couldn't get into it al all. The sound was insane!! Only drove with the top up and cabin noise is much louder. If you dont want the car to be loud, this is not the system for you, thats for sure. ITs everything I wanted. At idle the car rumbles. At part and moderate throttle the car has a furious sound. I couldn't do any WOT blasts but I'm sure it will be a thing to behold. As far as the gears, I initially ordered 355's but changed my mind to 373's and am very pleased. In CT there's not much road to open the cars up fully. There's a bit more rowing but its the poerfect compromise. If I lived in the midwest, I think the geras would be to tall but here they are perfect. I can idle around a parking loot a 1250 rpm at around 10 mph. In 6th on the highway at 80 mph I'm at 1600 rpm. I can hold 70 mph on the highway now in 6th while going up a hill. I used feel I needed to shift or the car would bog a bit. All in all I'm very happy, great mods. Next year I'll tune the car!!

Congrats. Enjoy but be careful of the sound. Many of us have found out the hard way that loud can cause a hearing loss. And the loss may not show up immediately. The first sign may be tinnutis ( ringing in your ears). After that, you may find that you have a little trouble hearing certain voices. Some wear ear plugs but this is a dangerous and illegal solution since if you wear plugs you may not hear an emergency vehicle approaching or a horn honking.

Its not that loud! Its takes 100 dbs 2 hours before it CAN cause hearing damage. I would say the car cruising in 6rh is well under 100 dbs. WOT is antoher story, but I'm not running WOT for hours on end.

Good advice. I am 39 and have major hearing loss combined with tinnitus. Too many years of fast (and loud) cars. A friend of mine works at Lubrizol and dynos engines all day. His ears were fine until one night, while in bed, the ringing started. It hasn't stopped since. Goes to show that tinnitus can start in an instant, with no warning.

In 6th on the highway at 80 mph I'm at 1600 rpm.

Are you sure you're in 6th? :) With my stock GenII gear I'm turning about 1750 @ 80mph if I recall correctly. I think the rear tires of the SRT are about 1' 1/2 taller than the GenII but even so I would have guessed the gear swap would have a much higher rpm result. Interesting.

I'm gonna double check, I only put a few miles on the car after the mods. I'm going for a 100+ mile cruise today so I'll report back with more findings!

Thanks god the weather is nice, last week I was sure I was going to have to put the car away!!

It's a lot of fun, but yeah, it's a touch on the loud side. You know it's loud when other Viper owners comment on how loud your car is.

I'm a Safety Specialist and work in oil/gas refineries...OSHA permits a PEL (permissible exposure limit) of 90db TWA (time weighted average) over an 8 hour shift w/o hearing protection. Most companies and facilities supercede this by requiring hearing protection to be worn by anyone exposed to 85db regardless the time. Most facilities also require double hearing protection (ear muffs over earplugs) for any activities exceeding 105db. 90lb jackhammers just exceed this. The two factors to consider in hearing loss is time exposure and decibles.

The following link will send you to the OSHA chart regarding noise exposure, which is a Federal Regulation that is backed by extensive research and years of data. Occupational noise exposure. - 1910.95

If you wanted to know the db's inside your car you would need a dosimeter, but the short amount of driving most of us do in our cars (regardless the exhaust system) would not impose a serious risk. Earplugs worn correctly reduce by approx. 33 db's if you are that concerned but that could create additional risks far beyond hearing loss (T-Boned by a Mac truck you didn't hear).

YEA!!! I finally got to relate my work to Vipers...LOL

Take care,
Justin

After my nice cruise today, I have a few more observations and some corrections as far as MPH related to RPM with the 373's. At 80 MPH the car was at about 1800 RPM and at 100 MPH the car was turning about 2250 RPM. The 373's are a big improvement in derivability as compared to the 307's. On the highway, I can keep the car in 6th, even when passing and going up hills (the extra HP from the full exhaust helps also). As expected, I was shifting a bit more but it was enjoyable. I found I was usually always in the right gear or just one gear off. In the past I found the need to shift from 6th to 4th on the highway if I felt like goosing it a bit or passing some **** going 55 in the left lane. Now a simple shift to 5th is adequate. I don’t know how much top speed would be affected but I had no problem hitting 140 MPH very easily today. The best part was I was actually able to easily accelerate in 6th gear after I shifted around 130 MPH or so, again, I'm sure the full exhaust helps a bit as well!!

Now for some more exhaust observations; I did some driving with the top and windows up, top up and windows down and also top and windows down. With the top and windows up, the car rumbles when cruising along. While on the highway in 5th there is a bit of drone but not the drone I used to get in my magnum with the headers and cat back. It’s not as bad and is more just the low hum of the exhaust. Shifting to 6th at highway speeds quiets things down to just a tad louder then stock, maybe 15% or so. With the windows down on the highway the exhaust becomes much more evident. Passing any vehicle or barrier of some sort, you can hear the car quite clearly. Again, in 6th gear it’s just marginally louder but in 5th it’s very evident. I did a short trip on the highway with the top down with the same result; In 6th I could hear the car over the wind noise but nothing even close to annoying. In 5th the car sounded awesome. Now for the fun stuff. WOT with the top and windows up was insanely loud. The inside of the car becomes utter chaos!! Fist off the car quickly lost traction in first gear so I short shifted to second as the car hooked and the nose rose aggressively as I got pinned hard until the car broke free again around 4500 RPM and I shifted to 3rd and eased off. This was a total sensory overload. The deafening sound of the exhaust echoing inside the cabin, trying to maintain grip and maintain the cars course was much more then I expected. My girlfriend was utterly shocked!! The car sounds like a beast, I'm very satisfied. I did a few WOT pulls with the windows down and the sound is deafening, especially when passing objects that reflect the sound. I am amazed at just how much louder the car is at WOT and over 4000 RPM. My girlfriend brought up a great point. She asked if the car was loud enough to get a ticket while accelerating under WOT. I explained to her that there were probably half a dozen other violations one would commit when accelerating in such a manner that I doubt the loud exhaust would do much but draw attention to the car and the numerous moving violations!! With the top down the exhaust is not annoying at all. It really only becomes an issue when accelerating aggressively over 4000 RPM or so.

In conclusion, I'm very happy with my choice in gearing. I don’t plan on going the forced induction route so I feel the 373's are a great addition. There's a bit more shifting involved but I drive the car for enjoyment and this makes the car a bit more enjoyable. I think the drivability of the car is much improved also, especially around town and maneuvering through parking lots and such. As far as the exhaust, I'm very satisfied. Getting the gears installed at the same time as the exhaust limits me as far as giving a true assessment of SOTP power gains. The combo of gears and exhaust is a HUGE difference and makes first gear nearly unusable for hard WOT runs. This sound is exactly what I wanted. The car now sounds as aggressive as it looks. Finally, no longer do I get any real heat coming from the firewall and side sills. I drove 40 miles at one point and the foot wells were just a tiny bit warmer then the rest of the car. When I opened the car, the entire side sills were cool to the touch, not warm, but cool!! Just be aware that the exhaust tips for the Belanger cat back stick out about 1/4" and they are hot. They can easily burn someone if they are not careful.

Nader, my Viper is a 2005.

I love the sound of my Belanger headers with cat deletes. I rarely listen to the radio because the sound of the exhaust is much more satisfying. WOT is insane and sounds like two Hyabusas running side by side, each on steroids. It's hard not to floor the accelerator just to listen to it open up. I just had my gears installed but haven't gotten to drive it yet because it's in Texas and I'm working in New Jersey. I'll have to wait until Christmas. Congrats on the upgrades...be careful and enjoy...

ok big question.... what did it cost?? I plan on doing the same exhaust on my 08 in the spring but you make the gear change sound like a great idea what did it cost for the gears and exhaust?

Total was around $4200 shipped for the gears, headers, high flows and cat back through Parts Rack. The total install was around $2100 with tax and everything. The shop I go to isn't cheap but they stand behind their work and have done a few builds for Mustang and Diesel Truck Magazines. not bad. I hope you enjoy it. I know the 08 needs something for sure the stock exhaust is lame.

Congrats for having the **** to puts some real gear in the car. With your taller Gen III rear tires your gearing is the same as the 3.55s in my Gen II. This is how the cars should ahve come from the factory (I have shorter 5th and 6th ratios also - now those are sweet).

Hey Bruce,

A few of us local Viper owners will be driving the "Roval" at Auto Club Speedway with Speed Ventures this weekend in Fontana.

We have various exhaust systems. One of our guys has a new ACR with the Belanger headers, high flow cats and side exhaust.

You should stop by if you get a chance. For more info, go to . : : SoCal Viper : : . .

geez I am like SOoooo jealous, congrats on your setup!

sounds like you really researched it and customized what you knew would all work together to produce the results you were looking for. I only have intake and Corsas and it's JUST not loud enough for me. I gotta fix that next year.

Dan,
I've already signed up with Speed Ventures for Sunday's autox for my better half in an EVO as I'm trying to get her into autox. If she's willing to dirve the EVO out, then I'll bring the ACR also, if not, we'll just come in the EVO together. I'll stop by the in field for sure and which days are you guys running?

Very nice I have 3:73 gears and I love them. Instant power. I had 3:55 also which I liked very much also but had problems with them wineing you could really hera the gears which I didn't care for at all I have 3 diffs 1 3:07 1 3:55 and 1 3:73 I think if you drive around with 3:73 a dirr cooler should be installed Thats per Jon at Parts Rack. I can see where it might get a bit hot on a longer drive. I did the high flow cats and corsa but it was to loud for me so I took them off. kept the Corsa and enjoy that.
Best.

Can the Belanger headers be ordered to work w/ two factory cats and stock exhaust? Of course the entire header, highflow cat and Magna flow exhaust will yield more power, but I do not want to draw too much attention from the law driving around here in LA and getting too old for droning exhausts.

Hey Bruce,

I'm planning to run Saturday and Sunday. Not sure which car yet as I lost the trans in my 01 GTS ACR last Saturday at Spring Mountain. It's at DC - hopefully they can turn it around in time. If not, I'll likely drive my 06 SRTC. It's not really a track prepped car like my GTS but it's fun to drive and I've already paid the entry fee.

We have a few guys running Friday, some Saturday and Sunday, some Saturday only and some Sunday only.

Yes, you can fab up a system using the big secondary OE cat with the Belangers. It should be quieter than the smaller H/F cat that comes with the system. I'd call Lou Belanger and talk with him about this before doing it as he'll likely know the best way to quiet his headers / exhaust system down.

Yes, you can fab up a system using the big secondary OE cat with the Belangers. It should be quieter than the smaller H/F cat that comes with the system. I'd call Lou Belanger and talk with him about this before doing it as he'll likely know the best way to quiet his headers / exhaust system down.

Can you report on here when you find out about this semi-loud package ?
