I have a 98 GTS, TT with 54K miles and was going crazy trying to solve a high speed miss that had developed. I tested or swapped out everything to do with the ignition including the AEM and no luck. One day while logging all the sensor parameters at the top of 4th gear the engine went dead and saw there wasn't a cam sensor signal. I pulled the sensor after we towed it home and the end of the sensor had been knocked off by the cam sprocket. The bolt was loose allowing the sprocket to wobble.
I would suggest if you have your timing cover off for any reason to remove the bolt , locktite it and tq @ 55 ft lb.
I just thought I'd pass along this info.
