Just got the oil changed at Sunnyside [read good stuff about their viper tech Gary on this board]. We noticed that the underbody had oil stains on it. Drained the oil, cleaned the underbody and started to look for signs of leakage.

The timing gasket was sticking out and showed clear signs of having a leak. I never noticed any oil on the ground.

Anyways, $450 labor, $32 antifeeze, $40 gasket is what I was quoted.

Called Roanoke and I was told the gasket was $146 and they wanted $600 in labor.

Could Sunnyside have given me a price for the wrong gasket? Can someone who replaced the gasket please confirm?

Thanks.

Just talked to Chuck and the three gaskets and one seal required cost about $40. He also explained what needs to be done and took time to help me with the alarm setting off by itself [hood switch].

What a guy.

Thanks a lot, Chuck :2tu:

I had a timing chain cover gasket leak too, and it took Chuck about 1 minute to diagnose the problem. That's the advantage Chuck has over so many others, he has seen it all and knows what years were prone to what problem. When I told him on the phone my oil leaking issue, he was positive it was that gasket becuase they were known to fail on "98's. And of course he was right.

My 98 failed. Had it fixed and now it looks like it's leaking again. I think I'll fix it myself this time. What kind of advice did Tator give?

I do not know the complete details, but will list out what I jotted down :)

You'd need 3 gaskets and 1 seal as listed below:

Timing Cover Gasket - $23
Water Pump Gasket - $12
Oil Filter Adaptor Gasket - $8-9
Crank Seal - $11-12

Would have to remove the oil pan to do this job. The oil pan gasket is reusable unless by your judgement you think it needs to be replaced. Costs $137.

You'd need to drain the antifreeze to do this and hence will need to fill up once done. Also might lose some oil and need to fill up once done.

He also mentioned it would be a 3hr job.

My guess is I'm telling you something you already know :)

i just did the job a few months ago, very simple and straight forward. i do know a little about turning wrenches, but that was not an issue very easy job, just take your time. you will need to have a puller for the harmonic balancer. be very easy putting the crank seal back on, make sure you lube the shaft well, as always, so the rubber does not roll off of the spring around inside of the seal.
