Re: Possible Buy?...Insurance

It's none of my business, but I see two problems:

1. Do you have enough savings that if the car requires a $1,500 repair for new head gaskets, you can afford it?

2. Why don't you wait on the Viper until you are older and have established ownership of a piece of real estate, and perhaps have some money in the bank?

You can be an old guy like me and still enjoy a Viper. Possibly even more if you know you can afford to own and operate it.

Let's either buy the friggin' car or forget it.
My vote is 100%, don't look back, tire-shredding PURCHASE.
When Cisco gets old he'll want a Hyundai and it's 10-yr. common sense, conservative warranty - not a Viper.

1. yes

2. don't want to wait 5 years or more when I CAN get one "now" ( doesn't imply right away...just relatively soon. )

Re: Check this out for me?

I am thinking it would be a good idea to have car checked out BEFORE I offer and go up myself. This car is located in Gaylord, MI. This is about 3.5 hours from Detroit, MI. Would anyone be willing to check it out for me? If so, I would then set up a appropiate time with the owner. But I need to knwo if anyone can prior to " setting anything up ".

Re: Check this out for me?

You should do your dealing first. Decide on an acceptable price.
The owner isn't going to say yes to any lower offers unless you are ready to send him a deposit if he agrees on a deal.

Make your deal first. You will be at a serious bargaining disadvantage if you have driven 3.5 hrs to start making offers.

Then get your money lined up and ready.
Then get your insurance ready.

Make the 3.5 hour trip to do the deal and pick up the car based on a final inspection.

What will you use for license plates?

Will you get the car transported?

Will you have enough money to pay the tax on the car when you get your plates?

Are you ready to go on this?
Are you really going to buy this car if it turns out to be what the owner says it is?
If you are just going to look at the car and say "well maybe", you are wasting everyone's time.

Are you ready to go or are you just looking?

Re: Check this out for me?

Uhm....I would check it out myself if it were ONLY 3.5 hours from me. I however live 5 hours MORE away from that. He lives 3.5 hours from Detroit and I am 4-5 hours from Detroit. And I already have a " acceptable " price I would be " willing " to pay. And guy said I COULD have it checked out.

Re: Check this out for me?

Joe is right in that you get all the info you can on the phone. I have bought two cars this month and I always ask, "What does the car need?" If he tells me something I will ask "What else?" I'll do the same with the body and interior. I will then make an offer by asking, would you take 26? I am offering based on his description, then if the car doesn't meet the description (and they seldom do) I start reducing the money by saying, "You didn't tell me there was a bald tire, I made my offer based on your description as perfect." One year I bought eight cars and I did them all this way.
If you go to MI and then make an offer you will have so much time and emotion invested that you will tend to take the car at his price just to get it done and get back home.
Would be great to get a mechanic check it out even though you will probably have to pay the fee.

Re: Check this out for me?

Rick, both you and Joe make some good points. I have what I believe to be a complete description of the car. Should I call back one more time and ask " what else " prior to have somebody check it out? And at that point also ask " how much " so that I have something to base final reductions ( if any ) on?

p.s. While I am sure I can, I need to ask. Is it "ok" or in my "best interest" to nit-pick every detail when it comes to the price?

Re: Check this out for me?

I never ask "how much" because I already know what he wants. I always make an offer (lower than what I'll give). This does two things; 1) it demonstrates that you are a serious buyer and not a tire kicker; 2) it allows you to get a feel for his response. If he says, "I don't know, maybe....", then he is thinking about it.
What's to lose. You can always go up.
I would say something like, "If the car is what you say it is, I will give $28,500 this week. Would you take a personal check or do you need a cashier's check?"
Never seem eager. Be somewhat disinterested as though you are looking at several others and you are in no hurry, even though you will buy quickly if you find the right car.
I currently have three cars for sale. If I think a guy is not really interested then I don't return the call. I price w/i 5% of what I'll take. If the guy offers w/i 10% of what I'll take, then I try and work with him.
It's not nit-picking if he calls the car flawless or perfect. It is nit-picking if he says the car shows usual wear. Usually mechanical malfunctions aren't considered nit-picking.

Re: Possible Buy?...Insurance

If you are looking for a lower cost 95 check this one out:
http://www.morgansauto.com/
Go to rebuilables and see it there. It says it is a clean title, but I assume it has been wrecked since it is listed under "rebuildables". I don't know anything about it. If anyone knows anything more, please post.

Any idea what this 'rattle' was? Can you give more details on this? Car sure looks nice in the image.....price is nice...

Did they say it had been wrecked?

It had already been repaired. My idea is that it was messed up and partially fixed. Gotta wonder WHY it was not completely fixed.

Re: Possible Buy?...Insurance

This sure makes that pristine 94 RT with 16k mi that sold for 27k the best buy of 2004. Congrats to the lucky SOB that stole that one.
