The guy bought my car yesterday and today he calls form the road on his way back home to tell me there is smoke coming out the hood and oil down the side of the car. He says a hose under the air box has blown a hole in it. I figure it is power steering hose. I know this has been a common problem on Vipers from my many hours of research on here, this is why I kept a constant watch on my Power Steering fluid levels. But is it common for the hose to actually blow out? From my research it looks like the top fitting usually starts leaking first then gets worst, but my car has never had any leaks from anything.

Anyway how can this guy get home now? He is like 600 miles from home right now and needs to get back asap. I dont know what to tell him it is Sunday and he is in Nashville. I figure his best bet is stay over in Nashville call the wizard tomorrow and the local Dodge dealers to find a hose local or get the wizard to over night a hose to him. Any one have any suggestions at all like a Viper tech in the Nashville area?

OK just spoke with him again. It is an oil line that runs from the engine block under the right side of the airbox and into the silver block up to the right side by the radiator. What is this line an oil cooler line??? It is an 1/8" split so I figure he can just wrap one small piece of cloth over it then clamp it tight as hell with a hose clamp and at least get it down to a small dripping leak to at least get home. What are some ideas guys? Anyone ever have this happen? My luck has rubbed off on Rob(the buyer).

That's definitely the oil cooler line. The best way to fix it in the field is to make a cut at the point where it is leaking and splice in a brass house-coupler fitting from and auto parts store, Home Depot or Lowes. That fix shouldn't take more than an hour or so to do as long as he can get to the hose. He could probably do a fix like you mentioned and get home, but he will need to stop quite frequently to check the oil level. Also, he should keep a few quarts of oil with him to top it off if it keeps leaking.

Thanks sooo much Martin. I love your idea and if my fix doesnt get him very far I will tell him to find a lowes or Home depot and do your fix. He did the fix I recommended wrapped duct tape around it then put a hose clamp right over the slit then another hose clamp on each side of that for extra pressure. I think it might still leak slowly but like you said will prob get him home. Yes I bought like 10 quarts of oil to check the oil level and top it off ever so often. Also told him if the oil light comes on pull over and top off right then:omg:. Thanks again, Wayne

Christ.... dont' wait for the Low Oil Pressure light... check the level and check it often!!! (Or tow it for crying out loud...) You'll hate yourself forever if you wipe the engine because you pushed it getting home over a $5 hose barb.
