Question About Heater Vents

OK...I finally had to try out the heat in my '97 GTS this evening. I turned the temp control all the way to the right (hot), and turned the fan to high, turned the position control knob to blow out the front vents, and all I get is cold air. The air is good and warm as long as it is on defrost, or defrost/bottom vent mix, or bottom vent (all positions to the right of the off position). Does the heat blow out the front 3 vents on the dash, or are these vents air condition vents only?

Yep, you figured it out already. No heat from the panel vents, outside air or AC only.

Is it any reason the cars are designed this way? When I have my heat on, my legs are nice and toasty but I'd prefer heat coming from the center vents as well.
