Rear Speakers

So I have had a week with my new ride and have been starting to tweak a few things... Now my attention is pointed toward the stereo as I have come to discover that I have NO speakers in the rear... Nor do I see any wires from a previous inhabitants...

I would like to add the JL 6W0 subs back there, what will I need? I have the stock Alpine head unit and the stock amp..

Do I need a seperate amp and crossover?

Advise please.

The JL 6W0 is a subwoofer so you would need a crossover. The stock Alpine amp doesn't have a low frequency crossover circuit. So you should get an aftermarket amp which would sound worlds better anyway. If you want to have rear imaging you will need to make some speaker pods like this

I really like those speaker pods. I found a photo in your photos catalog. It looks like it helps balance out the sound transition form top to bottom as well as front to rear. the box material matchs the interior very nice.

Thanks, they were done by a guy at work. He used to own a custom audio shop and did cars for NBA players.

My rear speaker grills are screwed into the carpet but the speakers are screwed into the car back , is this how it should be or does the speaker grills screw into the spaekers and backing also??

My grills are riveted to the carpet pad. The speakers are screwed into the sheet metal. They don't really touch each other.

Well,

Put in some new Infinity speakers this morning, found the original wiring (It had been cut!!) and to my suprise.... It sounds like s**t...

I was expecting to hear something like the fronts but the rears are quiet and don't have near the presence of the fronts...???

So... Back to my original thought...

JL subs... Now there is a switch on the stock amp that I believe acts as a crossover... Can I take the speaker output from the rear, activate the switch, run to a second amp and then to the two JL 6" subs?

Suggestion appreciated...

I was led to believe that the rear speakers are "woofers". No sense in driving higher freq. into carpet/trunk. Can't help with the amp question though. Stock amp is around 300 watts. Very weak/poor. A lot of people rave about the sound of the polk DB650 speakers, haven't tried yet.

I'm pretty sure the rear speakers were full range stock. If you want to replace them with a woofer or subwoofer you need to crossover the frequencies.

Why would you want to keep the stock amp if you are going to add a second amp? Just replace it with an aftermarket and much better amp.

I have no problem changing the amp... I just don't want to be cutting and splicing the harnesses in case I want to go back to stock down the road...

Is there another amp that that will plug and play with the Apline head unit? I don't mind splicing the speaker wires, would just like to avoid cutting/changing the headunit cables...

The stock rear speakers are not full range. They are 6" woofers and they sound like crap. I thought that adding some full range 6 3/4 back there would help but it actually sounded worse. The position of the speakers does not allow the highs to enter the cabin properly. Also, the stock rears are 6 ohms versus the normal 4 or 2 ohms. I highly suggest using an aftermarket amp to drive the JL's. The acoustics in a GTS are some of the worst I have ever encountered in mobile audio. Just my $0.02

You probably don't want full range in the rear, because stereo imaging will be impaired. More than one pair of full range speakers is generally not a good idea for this reason. It makes sense that the rears are woofers.

Match the amp to your chosen woofers. I don't know much about the Viper amp / speakers, but woofers are not going to sound great without a properly designed enclosure. Without a good enclosure, the amp won't make any difference.
