Anybody shorten their stock shifter by cutting down the upper alloy shaft? I know they make a 1’’& 2’’ lowering bolt, but they lowers the leather shroud and I only want to cut down the upper shaft, about an inch. l

Did mine last week after installing the Hurst shifter. Stock threads on both the Hurst and factory (2001 GTS at least) are both 1/2-20 NF. Clamped the OEM shifter "carefully" with padding in the bench vice. Cut the stock shaft about 1/2 inch below the ball with a metal saw (or cut to whatever height you are trying to achieve with a stock shifter). Cleaned-up the edges on the grinder very gingerly. Then, drilled pilot hole into end of shaft about 1" deep into the end. Finished with a 29/64th bit so I could tap new 1/2-20 NF threads. Metal isn't too hard...just normal mild steel rod. Tap cut pretty good but take your time and use plenty of cutting oil. All in all, about a 30 minute job if you have all the tools.

Got the modified(shortened) Hurst shifter and shortened stock ball/shaft from FinalGTS. Stock shaft was cut 1.5" and the new combo feels fantastic. A bit more money to do it this way, but I got what I wanted.....what's another $100 in relation to the cost of the car, anyway? Dan is great to deal with, highly recommended.

Thanks EllowViper, I cut the bottom shaft and bolt of my GTS shifter. I didn’t cut off enough to have to retread, but on the SRT/10 the rod stops at the boot and drilling & rethreading may be necessary. Not sure I’m up for that myself.

TedK, FinalGTS sounds like the way I want to go. Do you have a ph. Number for them?

Hello Guys,

I will be out until about 6 PM EST today, but feel free to call from 6-9 PM EST.

I currently have 1 Modded hurst in stock, additional units will be 2 weeks turnaround. I can generally get Knobs done slightly quicker.

Here is the pricing until then:

Modified Hurst Shifter, same height as OEM: 324.00
(Hurst when it comes out of the box is about 1.5" taller than stock to begin with)

Knob Modification: 44.00, specify height reduction from stock.

New Late Model Knob (99-02) to modify if you dont want to use your original:
-Red: 60.00
-Black: 100.00 (Dont ask... makes no sense to me why its almost double the price)

Yes, I shortened my stock shifter about 1 1/2". There was a great thread on the Gen I/II board some months back with pictures. While DC Performance modified the shifter itself, I kept the original w/leather by first drilling deeper, cutting, then tapping. Search for the thread...

I believe DC Performance sells a modified stock shifter like the Woodhouse unit. Basically, a stock shift unit with different springs. I had the Woodhouse unit on my 2002, but I must say the Hurst on my '05 is a much better mechanism, well worth the money. Not to repeat myself, but the modded Hurst plus the shortened stock ball shaft is a really great feeling combo. Plus, it still looks "stock". I installed the Hurst from below, so no drilling.

I'm going to start with just a shortened stock shifter for now. Maybe a hurst in the future.

Sorry I did not return your call today, I did not get back in until almost 10 PM... ran WAAY over on some things I had to take care of. It sounds like you have decided to go another direction, but let me know if you would like me to give you a call and discuss anyway.

Thanks,

SRT/10 SWISS, Did you cut that from the top or bottom? Is that a stock shifter that you removed the top leather handle to cut it?

You should be able to do this with hand tools you have around the house.
No, I would not recommend to use hand tools!!!! You need at least a semiprofessional lathe.

I cut it from the bottom, the smal part in the right of my picture is the cut off. No, you don't need to remove the leather handle, but be carefull how to clamp it.

Seriously, in the Gen I/II forums there is a thread with pictures. Drill press, vise, hacksaw or cuttoff, tap. Just trying to help like everyone else.

I cut down my Gen II shifter myself. The Gen III is a little different.

Andrew,
I must be a clutz, I can't seem to be able to paste the short cut to the thread on the Gen I/II board so if you have the patience, on that boards forum search using the words "free" and "short", all posts. Back in 9/13/05 "2002 Viper GTS ACR" did a thread on doing this with his dad's genIII with pictures. I'm sure others had done this before, but it is what inspired me to do mine last year. Hopefully someone may chime in with the shortcut for me. Good luck and have fun.

Gotcha!
That sounds like work. I'd like it shorter, but I'd need to find someone with the tools and talent.
Thank you though, for all your help.

Andrew,

I know you are getting better info from SRT10 Swiss and he is absolutely on the money with the correct way to approach this task. The pictures in the thread I have been referring to, as I read it, are adapting a SRT shifter to the GTS. Follow those instructions to the letter, gradually going up drill sizes because we aren't machinists and at best we have a small drill press. This is exactly how I modified mine for my 2005 SRT10. Drill, drill, drill, drill, grind flat spots on either side, cut, tap, re-install. Yeah, you'll need a grinder and tap too.

I was able to turn this into an all day project last year getting myself out of a Saturday of "honey do's". She was so impressed with my skills as a Viper tech that I was forgiven.

Andrew,

any small mechanical workshop should be able to do it for less than $50.

I just imagine some wielder, getting grease all over the leather handle, and forgetting to protect the aluminum shaft when he clamps it.

I think it would be great for a Viper tuner company to do a exchange program. They'll send you a stock shifter cut down and you send your’s back to them for the next customer.

I found his photos of the GTS but none of an SRT/10.

HEY !! THATS MY POST/PHOTO !!

I explain IN DETAIL how to do it yourself... FYI.. Late Gen 2 and Gen 3 are the same. IF you find that post, you will see the project was kicked off, becasue I had already made mine years ago, and when I bought my dad an srt-10 he took mine..... so those photos are of me taking a 05 srt-10 handle and cutting it down, to work in EITHER an SRT-10 or a GTS !!
