Does anybody know?
On my stock 2000 GTS stereo, if I fad the speakers to the back they have no volume. Is that a built in cross over, (for highs and lows) or is my stereo screwed up?

I understand that on the stock unit, there is indeed a built in crossover to the rear. You should still be able to hear SOMETHING though.

A cross over does not fade front to back. A crossover separates frequencies. If you don't get any sound from the rears it's probably an adjustment or something blown in the head unit.

If you like the stock unit you might want to find a replacement. They're always listed for sale when someone puts in an aftermarket one. The aftermarket radios do not have the speed sensitive volume. They can't tap into the engine controller for the speed output. I can't figure out why they haven't done it yet. Either the OEM won't disclose how or they haven't figured it out yet.

I'm going to change out the speakers first and then the amp if it need be. I'm trying to avoid changing out the head unit. I hate the way all the new one's look. Too futuristic.

GTS 2000, I just pulled a $4,000 system out of a BMW I'm selling, and it's only a few years old. I'm putting that system in my 2002 Z71 Suburban. I'll do the Viper with all new components, MB Quart speaker, Xtant amps, the works.

I like traveling in my Viper alot, so I don't want to use up the whole back area for sub woofer & amps. I need room for some luggage. Although I think I could toss out the spare for more room. I drove the car about 20 mile when I first bought it without any air in a back tire and I couldn't tell. So maybe with somewhat run flats I could do without the spare.

Focal makes a new 5" sub that fits in the stock holes at the back. Focal is made by JM Labs. Add their 6" components in the doors, and a couple of U.S. Amps Exterminator 50X(Small footprint, they fit perfect in the little side wells), and you won't believe the sound with a stock look. Still leaves all the trunk space, and is hardly noticeable. I also added the new Eclipse head unit(Not flashy at all, and very high quality).

Andrew,

Depending on how much frequency range you want you won't be able to get as much SPL in the lower ranges with a smaller woofer. Why don't you make a subwoofer module that you can disconnect when you want your trunk back. I have a bazooka tube that unplugs when I play golf. I'm also working on a removable subwoofer/amp enclosure that has quick connects and sits on top of the spare. That way I'll have the best of both worlds and not lose out on any functionality.

Actually GTSnake, I think I've damaged my ear's already with my previous systems in my car's. So I'm not sure I want to much bass. But your right a Bazooka would do the trick.
