To forge or not to forge?

Hi all, I have a question. First off, I want to but a supercharger on my 05 SRT/10 Viper. My plan is to build the car up to handle +/- 800-850 crank hp. I already have safety equipment and race exhaust, computer controller and comp coup oil pan. My next mods are: Quaife 3:07 LSD, Motons, and braided brake lines. Then I am thinking a race/heavy duty clutch, lightweight flywheel, then into the engine. My question is, is it necessary to put in forged internals? I understand the stock internals can handle a supercharger, but I plan on keeping this car for some time, and plan many track events as well as around town driving. I want to maintain reliablilty over the long haul. I am thinking to do the forged internals, heads, cams, and maybe even headers to increase flow, which should give me a pretty stout N/A engine, then the supercharger will be able to perform to its full potential. Any input would be appreciated. What do you think?

Thanks,
Dave

You don't really need to change anything to make 800-850 at the crank. You can run that all day long with stock internals.

That is good to know, thanks, and would save a ton of cash:) How bout longevity, and will a supercharger alone get me to that power level? I am guessing I maybe picked up 20ish hp with the exhaust/cat delete. So, can I expect to get over 250 hp with a blower? Sounds kinda high.

I agree with BC, many are running 800 plus hp with no problem...
Check this post from "ViperGMC"...He took the motor apart after 20k hard miles...Very helpful

My car made 720 to the wheels, which translates to roughly 850 at the crank. It ran like a champ on stock internals, and all I had done was a throttle body, exhaust, and bigger injectors. I didn't even have headers. I didn't put a ton of miles on it before I sold it, sut it ran very well when I had it.

Wow, that's a lot of power, was that with a paxton, or what kind of super charger? Sounds like I wont need to dump a ton of cash into it to get a lot more power!

Thanks!

Maybe the track rats can answer this: If you're going to do a lot of track events, will the supercharger (as opposed to a twin turbo) add some overheating issues?

some 25 hard competitive track days and no heating issues what so ever, even in mid summer.

We aren't all as lucky as ViperGMC. I put some track days and some drag days on mine and experienced 7 of 10 piston ring land failures all attributed to the excess heat created by the Paxton. If you go Paxton, I wouldn't add anything else without going forged. You'll be glad in the long run.

On a related subject, the cam profile you would want with a Paxton will be slightly different than the cam profile in a N/A car, i.e., less overlap works better with the Paxton. You don't want the boost flowing out the exhaust valves.

You really need to figure out how you plan to use the car and where you want to end up before starting the mod process.

Good luck,

Dan

Many of the tuners talk about keeping the RWHP under 700 with the stock components. It is a general rule that I have heard over and over again. Where they came to that conclusion, I don’t know especially since the Paxton for the SRT is only about a year old. So anyway we have two examples, mine at 660 RWHP driven very hard for 20K miles including 25 some track days with the engine in pristine condition and Viper X with 750RWHP with significant ring failure. Statistically, not a valid sample population but it would seem that it is all we have for now. I want more HP so I am now beefing up the motor. I would personally feel safe with the stock motor with the stock Paxton at 650RWHP, I would not go above the mid 650’s. I could be just lucky as Viper X noted only time will tell.

Interesting side note; when talking to different suppliers for aftermarket engine parts they all pretty much said the same thing. “we have not seen any broken motors, so we aren’t seen any demand for stronger parts.” The other generally excepted statement is that the motor is capable of 1200RWHP.

Great input guys, and different results as well. Thank you. I have decided to start with the Quaife, and lightweight flywheel first, then the Motons, then I will do forged internals with a cam to accomodate the Paxton, as well as heads to maximize power output. I should have a pretty strong Viper by this time next year:)

Thanks again for your experience and input guys!!!
