Congrats!

For straight line acceleration- Take it easy until you get good at holding the wheel real straight while the rears are spinning. If the back end wants to come around, you must steer a bit to stay on top of it. If you correct, do it early, and don't correct "wildly". (See snap understeer below) Lots of guys have gone all the way around without catching it. There are dozens of stories on this board of newbies who have wadded up their new prized possesion for lack of education and skill.

For cornering under power- Get familiar with the way the torque breaks the tires loose in a turn when you are gassing it. Feathering the throttle will "aim" the car, practice this. It tends to oversteer when you are on the gas if you are not riding the slide properly, so you must countersteer while feathering the throttle. At this time, if you get off the gas suddenly, the rears will bite, and the car will quit going sideways, or at least the rear end does! If you had the wheel turned opposite to "ride the slide", now after getting off the gas, (Or if you wanna shift up) the fronts, still in opposite lock from the power slide, will now steer you outside, changing the car's direction almost like a drastic understeer condition would, and you will head for the curb/tree/pole/wall/cliff. (Technically, this is not true understeer, since the car is actually just going the way the front wheels are pointed, but the effect is the same, in that the car goes towards the outside of the turn, like it does in a true understeering scenario. I call it "snap understeer" for this reason. I have heard others call it "snap oversteer", but this doesn't sound as correct to me, because true oversteer sends the car towards the inside of a turn, not the outside. And its not really oversteering at all when this happens, its just steering the way its pointed! Albeit suddenly! So its more akin to understeer than it is oversteer, hence "snap understeer") Don't get off the gas suddenly! Feather it! Get used to doing that at slower speeds, before you do it at higher speeds. Always practice in a wide open area with no cars, curbs, or other obstructions around.

*Disclaimer* For the anal, or "elderly" at heart among us, of course all this is done in a fully prepared car with a full roll cage, 6 point belts, fire suppresion, wearing a helmet, Hans device, and Nomex suit with integral arm restraints, on a closed race track with an experienced instructor instructing, attending ambulance and fire crews, outrigger training wheels, and giant marshmallows tied to the walls.

That oughta take care of the nanny whiners!

Have fun, but stay safe!

SPEECHLESS!.... I have officially entered the Viper world... I don't think I can take this Kool-Aid smile off my face lol... we completed the transaction, and I'm the proud owner of a 96'Blue/White.... I am absolutely floored by the performance.... previous owner warned about accel out of a turn, so I took it easy.... but I got on it "a lil" on the straight and WHOA! and I barely stepped on it... I thought the Saleen turned heads.... maybe it's just me, but I could have sworn that cars were intentionally driving slower to see the car! lol... well, I believe in Santa Clause all over again! :) Merry X-Mas... I'll have pics by tomorrow! lol

It's not your imagination, get use to people staring and pointing. I was driving on the parkway yesterday just cruising along at about 65-70 and a car comes up behind me out of nowhere. He pulls aside me and I glance over and see a guy with two maybe 14 year old kids in the car, their noses mashed up agaainst the glass to have a look. I just smile and the kids give me the thumbs up. So naturaly I had to show them how the car can accelerate.... :smirk: Of course I had just washed and waxed it so it was looking awesome..
Good luck and learn the car before yo get too "spirited". You can find yourself facing the opposite direction you were heading real quick in the thing..

Here's a couple pics I took today, still hasn't quite set in yet that I own a Viper lol.... Anyway, as far as some advice guys.... there's a burning type smell.... "plastic" or "oil" burning type of smell, not sure though.... and it's only coming from inside the front wheel well???? I have noticed that heavy oil residue is building up front on top of the engine.... so it is leaking from SOMEWHERE.... but weird thing is I can't smell this certain smell from over top of the engine, only from the wheel well???? any ideas? Car has Edelbrock Headers, RollerRockers, K&N, Smoothtubes, BorlaExhaust.... maybe that oil is dripping down on the headers and burning off maybe that's what I'm smelling? does anyone know a reputable Viper Specialist in the Sacramento/BayArea?

And thanks for all the NEWBIE advice.... It's come in handy so far, I can tell this car has essentially no limits on power... wow.

Looks great :2tu:
I'm not a particular fan of those rims and the steeringwheel, but when I stood next to such a blue/white GTS myself for the first time it immediately looked good. The ride I had in it was even better (maybe the Paxton supercharger helped too :p ).

Thanks Mike, I actually think I need to take it to the dealership... I have to pick up another cooling fan module.... the fan blades apear to have dislodge from the module and barely turn when the fan comes on.... the U clip behind the fan just rattles, and the fan blades kinda lazily wobble and turn slow..... as if it's disconnected from the entire fan module... I'm just gonna get a new fan module and throw it in

Congrats! It sounds like you're happy. I hope it's everything you hoped it would be. As soon as I sell my Cobra, I'll be getting one too!

Car just hit 40K on the nose coming back from Reno, NV.... has Edelbrock Headers, RollerRockers, Smoothtubes, K&N, Borla Exhaust, Wilwood Stage III brake kit.... Interior has the Momo steering wheel, Racing seats & pedals....it was in the VCA classifieds for about a week... I got it for 39.5K, and seller threw in a stock polished GTS wheels/tires and stock leather seats.... so I'd be able to throw those on ebay to lower my overall cost....so I'm very satisfied with the deal... seller was a great guy... smooth deal. (thx Len.... I think I'll take your advise and go with the updated fan, first thing monday morning!) It's been killin me not driving the car, but I don't wanna chance it... it just heats right up cause the fan doesn't even spin anymore... )

Congrats! Nothing like owning a Viper. Saw that car in the paper and wondered where it'd go. Brought mine from San Fran a month ago and my first too. Took it out today before the next storm comes in. They're exciting cars. Good luck.
