As expected the big white trailer has not magically reappeared. I have a lead in SC forwarded to me by Ed, Double Venom, that I am following up on(if I can get the one man police dept. in Sumter SC to return my calls...). I called the Investigator assigned to my case and told him of the lead and he said to keep him posted if it turns up anything. Not too much effort being put into this - its a bit of a needle in a haystack, as no one would run the VIN of a trailer even if they pulled over the truck that was towing it. Not holding out much hope that it will be recovered. Sigh....

On a cheerier note, there has been a lot of talk around here about insurance companies and what you pay and levels of coverage. I have posted several times about Fireman's Fund being our insurance company. We pay about $1050 / year for each of the Vipers. However, this policy also includes a rider called "Repair or Replace" which states that if a vehicle cannot be fixed (or found), the company's limits of liability are up to, but not more than the cost of a new vehicle. Not "new to you" but NEW - showroom new, zero miles, no butt in the seat but yours new. And that amount is easy to figure out. Hassle free - especially important on cars like Vipers as we've all heard stories about the valuation of wrecked or stolen cars being absurdly low. It only applies to cars less than 5 years old so we'll lose it on the Vipers this year.

So now we gather the receipts and paperwork on the trailer and submit. The adjuster said he will work with us to settle this quickly (no cut and dried waiting period) and we'll be getting a 2001 48' Featherlite optioned just like our old one for the cost of our deductible - which is $50. One is coming in to Golden Gait Trailers and we have deposit on it. We may be hauling it to Mid Ohio if it arrives in time. We will not, however, be storing it at the same place

Every year, I freak out and convince myself I am getting ripped off by paying "so much" for insurance. So I quote other companies for both home and auto (2 96 GTSs, 2001 3500 Ram, 2001 VW GTI, and the trailer). Most don't quote when they hear I have replacement coverage (only 3 or 4 companies even offer it) and our homeowners is an HE7 (I think) which is very comprehensive coverage that is not offered by most companies. The big guys that have quoted (Allstate and State Farm) have not been competitive - either same cost for lesser coverage or higher cost for lesser coverage.

So, you really find out how good your insurance company is when you have a claim. The replacement coverage rider (which may be a total of $200 per year covering all vehicles) was worth its weight in gold as first year depreciation would have been brutal. The adjuster has been accessible and helpful, and as obnoxious as this whole mess has been, we should be back to normal without a huge unexpected expense. I cannot say enough good things about them. I'll keep you posted on the progress, but I am confident we'll have no problems.

Sorry so long, but with how we all value our cars, coverage like this can be priceless.

Good Luck finding your trailer Janni. Look at it this way atleast the snake was not in it. Hope to finally meet you at the Mid-Ohio Vipers Days event this month.

Janie,
I was sorry to hear about your trailer. It seemed kind of personal to me because you guys let me use a part of it to store my stuff at the Viper Days Finals in Texas. I did appreciate it and it kept my stuff dry during the funny weather. I did not have my trailer with me at the event so I can imagine the loss.
Maybe on the next one a lot of graphics would be in order , at least it would be easier to spot. And after some time in the sun some of them can still be seen if taken off.
Hope you get another one soon. Enjoy Mid Ohio

Given the insurance coverage that you have (new trailer for the $50 deductible), why are you looking for the trailer? If the trailer that was stolen is not found, you get a brand spanking new rig for essentially no cost (but likely quite a bit of time). If the trailer is recovered, you get back a unit that was likely abused/damaged and will probably never be quite the same.

I had a car stolen some years ago and the last thing that I wanted was to have it recovered. A trailer isn't the same as a car when it comes to abuse (you can't abuse the engine on a trailer, for example), but I'd still rather have a brand new replacement trailer than a theft recovery.

Good luck.

Well, there has to be at least some attempt to find the trailer. The insurance company, although good, does not just hand out checks for $30K after a couple of days. Besides, whoever took this trailer did so with the specific intent to sell it or use it, not to "joyride"

so messing it up was not in their best interest. And, actually, I liked the trailer. It was brand new, worked great, we'd shaken it down this past year and had quite a bit of time invested in it. So, if it was recovered quickly, and not damaged, yes, I'd like it back - it would make my life simpler. However, as I said, I am not holding out much hope.

Roger,
Thanks for your thoughts - we'll be back on the road again in no time!

If you want the trailer back, I of course hope that it is recovered in good condition. The time consideration is one thing I mentioned and that is no small matter. However, even though the thief took the trailer for resale (presumably), I don't think that you may assume that he/she will therefore take care of it.

Also, no insurance company expects the policyholder to do their own investigation or make other efforts to recover the stolen item beyond reporting the theft to the police. Again, good luck.
